Terminal Information – Departing
This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.
Flights to Phuket depart from the domestic terminal. The only word to describe Chiang Mai Airport is 'quaint'. There are shops selling Lana handicrafts, silk and souvenirs. There's a massage parlour where you can enjoy a full body or foot massage before boarding. There are a couple of coffee shops, but they're small and don't have many tables. There's plenty of seating in the departure lounge and free Wi-Fi is available. If you're flying with Bangkok Airways you can enjoy free lounge access: even if you're flying economy. The lounge features work stations, comfortable seating, and a fresh buffet with complimentary snacks and soft drinks.
Terminal Information – Arriving
You can reach Phuket Town by taxi, bus or car hire from Phuket Airport. Taxis cost 800฿* (just over £16) which isn't unreasonable, considering the journey takes 30-45 minutes. Shared minibuses charge ฿150-200* (£3-4) per person, depending on your haggling skills. These go from door-to-door and will drop you at your accommodation. Municipal buses charge ฿100* (about £2) and go to bus station 1 in Phuket Town. There's also an express bus service to Patong Beach: tickets cost ฿120* (just under £2.50) Some hotels in Phuket offer airport transfers, usually for an extra fee.
Give yourself plenty of time to get from your hotel to the airport: although it's close to the city centre, traffic in Chiang Mai can be extremely busy. Try to arrive at the airport no later than one hour before your flight is scheduled to depart. You will need to show some photographic ID when you check in and when you reach the departure gate. We recommend bringing your passport.
What to expect in Phuket
Prices in Phuket are higher than in Chiang Mai. Expect to pay about 300฿* (around £6) more for dinner for two, and ฿13* (about 25p) more for a domestic beer. Taxis are more expensive too: the starting rate is double the price and the price per kilometer is a quarter more. Phuket has warmer weather than Chiang Mai, making it a popular destination with beach lovers. Temperatures tend to sit in the high-twenties (celsius) all year, although temperatures can soar up to 37°C in April. The high season last from November 'til April, when the wet season begins.
