Hotels in Palma

With a landmark cathedral, excellent local gastronomy, and beautiful coastal landscapes it’s easy to see why hotels in Palma de Majorca are so popular with British tourists. The only city on the island, Palma is the perfect base for discovering everything Majorca has to offer.

Palma de Majorca is a fairly small city, easy to get around on foot wherever you’re staying. It’s still worth thinking about the location of your hotel before booking: do you want to be near the beach, the port, or in the centre of the action in the city itself?

Magaluf might be just along the coast, but when you’re in the centre of Palma de Majorca it could be a million miles away. There are historic buildings, olive trees line the streets, and the nightlife is very low key. Boutique hotels are really taking off in the city, which is great news for luxury travellers, although there are still lots of mid-range options for those on a tight budget.

There are lots of hotels clustered around the Puerto de Palma, the city’s main port. Palm-tree lined boulevards run along the side of the turquoise waters of the Med, and there are plenty of terrace bars and restaurants making the most of the stunning view. It’s not too far to walk into the city centre, with its traditional restaurants and wine bars.

Hotels near the Puerto are also convenient if you’re planning an island hopping holiday. From Palma you can take ferries to the other Balearic Islands, Menorca and Ibiza, as well as to the Spanish mainland. There are frequent ferries to Barcelona and Valencia, although with voyage times sitting around the eight hour mark it’s not exactly day-trip material.

If you’re visiting Majorca for its famous beach life, head to Cala Major. The beach resort sits a few miles out, to the west of the city, and there are lots of big hotels lining the promenade. It’s a ten minute drive from downtown Palma if you have a hire car, but there are good public transport links if not. Then again, you don’t need to travel into the city: Cala Major has plenty infrastructure of its own, with lively bars and restaurants to relax in after a day of basking on the golden sands.
