Compare luggage sizes, weights, and costs across airlines

Finding the right cabin or hold baggage allowance can be tricky, with each airline setting different size, weight, and price rules. Our luggage comparison tool makes it easy to compare baggage policies across multiple airlines at a glance.

We’ve gathered data from official sources to ensure accuracy. For clear visual comparisons, we've standardised luggage dimensions where airlines use total measurements (height + width + depth). Costs are converted to GBP for consistency, giving you a hassle-free way to check extra baggage fees before you book.

Use the tool to find the best luggage options for your trip—without any surprises at the airport!

Disclaimer: The baggage allowances shown in this tool are based on Economy class fares. Allowances may vary depending on airline, route, travel class, and fare type. All dimensions provided include handles and wheels.

Conversions are accurate as of March 2025. All sources and links to official airline pages can be found directly within the planner or the table below.

Airline specific checked baggage allowances

A quick reference guide

Here we’ll look at a few airlines in detail and investigate their checked baggage allowances, including British Airways, Ryanair and easyJet.

British Airways

Checked baggage policy

British Airways' checked baggage allowance varies depending on your ticket type and destination. On most flights, there’s no checked baggage for Economy Basic. On Economy (with checked bag) you get one 23kg bag. On Premium Economy, it’s two 23kg bags, whilst passengers flying Business get two 32kg bags, and anyone flying on First can travel with three 32kg checked bags.

Ryanair

Checked baggage policy

Ryanair typically charges for checked baggage, with fees varying based on weight and route. You can usually add either a 10kg or 20kg bag to your booking, with a maximum of three 20kg bags on the same booking. Pre-booking your baggage online is always cheaper than adding it at the airport.

easyJet

Checked baggage policy

easyJet allows passengers to purchase checked baggage, with different weight options available. The smallest checked bag you can choose is 15kg and a standard checked bag is 23kg. You can purchase weight in additional 3kg units up to a maximum of 32kg per bag. You can also pool your allowance with other passengers.

Other airlines

Checked baggage policy

As we’ve already mentioned, checked baggage policies vary from airline to airline. Always check your chosen airline’s website for their checked baggage allowance before you travel, to avoid costly fees at the airport.

Before you travel: essentials to know

Hold luggage FAQs

In some cases, yes you can but it always depends on the airline. For example, you can pool checked luggage allowances with other travellers on easyJet. You can also do it on Ryanair if you’re on the same flight reservation. But you can’t do it on British Airways.

This depends on the airline. All airlines have a policy for overweight bags and will have a fee structure in place. But whether or not staff enforce it at the airport often depends on how strict the airline is. If you’re worried about your bag being overweight, try to pack lighter. Or consider adding extra weight to your booking online before you travel.

“No free checked baggage” means you can’t take a hold bag on your flight without paying – carry-on luggage will likely still be included. If you want to check a bag into the hold, book one online and add it to your reservation. It will be much cheaper than trying to do it at the airport.

Airlines generally adhere to their stated weight limits and are often strict with enforcing them. This is especially the case with budget airlines.
Weighing your bags before you leave home guarantees that you won’t be charged overweight fees when you get to the airport. Use your bathroom scales or buy digital luggage scales which are so compact you can take them with you to use before you head home too.

Visit your airline's website for their most up-to-date checked baggage information.

You will likely pay fees for oversized luggage. In some cases, your bag may even be refused if it’s over the airline’s maximum stated size. It’s important to check your chosen airline’s policy before you travel to the airport.

Typically, you are allowed to put your laptop into your checked luggage, although some airlines have rules around batteries which may mean your laptop needs to be packed into your carry-on bag. Check with your specific airline for their latest guidance on flying with laptops and electronic devices.

You’ll be glad to hear that the hand luggage restrictions on liquids do not apply to checked baggage, so you’re free to bring back jam/honey/your favourite tipple from abroad! There are limits on how much alcohol you can pack depending on where you’re travelling to/from.

Within the EU:

  • 110 litres of beer

  • 90 litres of wine

  • 10 litres of spirits

Outside of the EU:

  • 16 litres of beer

  • Four litres of wine (not sparkling)

  • One litre of spirits
