Swiss Air is the only airline providing direct flights from Birmingham to Zurich.
Birmingham Airport has just one terminal. Passengers are advised to arrive at Birmingham Airport at least 90 minutes before their scheduled flight departure time. Swiss Air also offer online check-in which you need to complete in advance.
Passengers can speed up their journey through security buy purchasing a priority pass for £3.00. Passes are available online in advance of your journey or on the day from self-service kiosks outside the security area. With a pass, you can use shorter priority queues and will find yourself in the departures lounge much more quickly.
The departures lounge at Birmingham Airport is home to a great selection of shops, restaurants and bars. Holiday essentials can be found at Boots, WHSmith and Dixons Travel, while little luxuries are available at Pandora, Victoria’s Secret and Hugo Boss. For food on the run, there’s Burger King or Pret A Manger, and for a more leisurely bite to eat there’s a Wetherspoon’s pub, Frankie & Benny’s or Giraffe. Passengers will also find a duty free store and a currency exchange.
Aspire Lounge and No. 1 Lounge offer an alternative to the standard departures lounge. These premium lounges are available for a fee and provide free Wi-Fi, complimentary food and drink and a quiet space in which to spend the time before your flight.
Zurich Airport is located 13 kilometres north of Zurich city centre. The large terminal building is split into different sections. There are two arrivals hall areas, 1 and 2, located on the ground floor. Both arrivals halls offer a variety of services. There are information desks where you can find out about onward travel or local attractions, cash machines and some food and drink outlets. Arrivals 2 is also home to a Travelex currency exchange office. Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport, free of charge for up to 60 minutes.
If you’re planning to hire a car from the airport, you’ll find the car hire centre based on level 1, in the Airport Center, easily accessed from both Arrivals 1 and 2. There’s a great selection of companies based there including Thrifty, Budget, Avis, Alamo, National, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.
Other onward travel options include bus, tram and train services. You can visit the SBB travel centre for information or to buy tickets. Tickets are also available from machines in Arrivals 1 and 2.
Taxi ranks are located outside both Arrivals 1 and 2, with a journey into the city centre costing around CHF 70.
What to Expect in Zurich
Zurich experiences four distinct seasons, with warm summer temperatures and very cold winter temperatures. Summer lasts from June to September, when temperatures vary from 16°c to 30°c and there is a fair bit of rainfall. Winters in Zurich are cold and snowy with the average temperature hovering around zero and lots of exciting winter sports on offer around the city.
Zurich is renowned as an expensive city and prices are certainly higher than in Birmingham. You can expect to pay CHF 100 (£67.00) for a mid-range three course meal for two, CHF 6.00 (£4.00) for a bottle of beer and CHF 4.30 (£2.90) for a one way journey on public transport.
