Terminal Information – Departing

Edinburgh Airport only has one terminal. Check-in and bag drop desks are located on the ground floor of the terminal, while security is located upstairs. The departure lounge is spacious, with a good range of places to grab a bite to eat. As well as the usual bars and coffee shops there's also a Yo! Sushi and a dedicated champagne and seafood bar. There are plenty of designer shops to browse, from Kurt Geiger and MAC Cosmetics to Jo Malone and World Duty Free. If you need any last-minute essentials you can pick them up in Boots or WHSmith. The airport also boasts a spa, an art gallery and two executive lounges: No.1 Traveller and Aspire. Seating is ample and every passenger can enjoy two hours of free Wi-Fi: perfect for some last-minute pre-holiday gloating.

Terminal Information – Arriving

The underground Metro line 8 has one stop for terminals 1, 2 & 3 and a separate stop at terminal 4. It takes 12-15 minutes to reach Nuevos Ministerios station in central Madrid. Tickets cost €5* (about £3.50). Another option is the 24 hour express bus which goes to Atocha train station in the city centre. Tickets also cost €5*. Public bus 200 is a little slower and goes to Avenida de América in the city centre. Tickets are €1.50* (just over £1).  The C-1 commuter train stops at Terminal 4 and goes to Chamartin and Atocha stations. Tickets are €2.15* (about £1.50). Expect to pay €30-50* (£21-36) for a taxi. There are car hire desks in terminal 1 and terminal 4. If you're planning a self-drive holiday remember to compare car hire at Madrid Airport before you fly.

What to expect in Madrid

Madrid is one hour ahead of Edinburgh and the currency is the Euro (€). It's a good idea to learn a few Spanish words and phrases: not everyone speaks English. Madrid is a lot hotter than Edinburgh during the summer months, with an average temperature of 25°C. During the winter the temperature is similar to what you would expect at home, with an average temperature of 6°C in January (compared to 3°C in Edinburgh). April is the wettest month, so pack an umbrella if you're planning to visit in Spring. Prices in Madrid are lower, especially when it comes to wine and beer. Spanish meal-times start an hour later than dinner in the UK: don't expect restaurants to get busy until at least 10pm.
