Airlines that fly from Barcelona to Rome
Alitalia, Ryanair and Vueling all fly direct to Rome Fiumicino from Barcelona El-Prat Airport. This is one of the top 5 routes from Barcelona Airport, so we recommend booking your flight well in advance.
Terminal Information – Departing
This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.
Barcelona El-Prat Airport has two terminals. Terminal 2 is split into three subsections. Alitalia and Vueling both depart from terminal 1 while Ryanair flights leave from terminal 2B. While terminal 1 is very modern (and the fifth largest terminal in the world), terminal 2B is the oldest existing part of Barcelona Airport.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Rome Fiumicino Airport is the main airport serving Rome, and the only airport that flights from Barcelona fly into.
· The Leonardo Express bus runs from the airport to Rome's main train station, Roma Termini. Tickets cost €14* if you book online or €15* if you buy them at the airport.
· There's also a suburban train, however this doesn't go all the way into the city centre and you may need to transfer to the tram or metro. Tickets cost €8 for the suburban train and €1.50* for a bus/tram/metro ticket.
· The Terravision bus is the cheapest option: tickets costs €4* if you book online or €6* on the day.
· Airport taxis charge a flat rate of €48* to any destination within the city walls.
· Car hire at Rome Fiumicino Airport is also available.
Practical Information
You don't need a passport to fly from Barcelona to Rome as both cities are within the Schengen area. We recommend keeping your passport on you, anyway, as you may be asked to show some photographic identification before boarding. Try to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before scheduled departure.
What to expect in Rome
Rome is in the same time-zone as Barcelona. Both Italy and Spain use the Euro (€) so there's no need to visit the currency exchange. Rome's climate is slightly warmer than Barcelona's in the summer, and slightly cooler during the winter. June to August are the hottest months, when temperatures can soar up to and beyond 30°C. If you're planning on doing a lot of sightseeing, this is a bad time to visit. If you're just planning to hop between the 12 best restaurants in Rome it might be okay, however. Generally speaking, Rome is more expensive than Barcelona. Expect to pay about €10* more for dinner for two, and €1.50* more for a draught beer.
