Where to stay in Rome

Where you stay in Rome will depend on what you want to do.  Choose from the Modern Centre, Old Rome & Colosseo or retreat to the peaceful North Centre.  For a more bohemian feel try Trastevere and there are also many conveniently located hotels near the airport.

Rome is famous for its incredible history, architecture and culture. The food isn't bad, either (as our guide to the city's 12 best restaurants shows). Rome is huge and has lots of different districts, each one with its own unique attractions. The best area to stay in Rome will really depend on what you want to do during your holiday: are you a first-timer planning to see all the sights, or a seasoned visitor looking for a different side to the city?

To help out, we've put together this quick guide to the best places to stay in Rome. From budget hostels to luxury hotels, we've handpicked a small selection of accommodation in each area to help you get started.

Hotels in Rome City Centre

Modern Centre, Old Rome & Colosseo

Most hotels in Central Rome are in this area, which is a buzzing hive of activity. Highlights include the Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum and Rennaisance era piazze. There are hotels, hostels, apartments and B&Bs here to suit all budgets.

1. Hotel Max

This relaxed hotel is just a few minutes' walk from the main train station, Rome Termini. Free continental breakfasts are served in the vibrant breakfast room.

Trastevere

This bohemian neighbourhood is just across the Tiber from old Rome, to the south of the Vatican. With its charming cobbled streets and peaceful piazze, it's easy to see why artists love this part of Rome.

1. Locanda San Pancrazio

This boutique hotel sits at the end of a cul-de-sac. It has a rooftop bar, free Wi-Fi and a laid back on-site restaurant.
