Where to hire a car at Rome Fiumicino Airport

There are 8 car rental companies based in Rome’s Airport. You can rent a car from Maggiorre, Sixt, Enterprise, Europcar, Avis, Autoeuropa, Hertz, Locauto and Rent4u. Each of the car rental companies have a great range of cars whether you need a small city motor or a large people carrier for road tripping Italy.
Many of the offices are located in terminal 2, but the car rental car parks are signposted in the Arrivals area (just a 5 minute walk from the exit).

Petrol stations close at Rome Fiumicino Airport

Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.

There is a Q8 fuelling station just outside of the exit of Rome Fiumicino Airport, as well as several others in the centre of Fiumicino. If you miss these, there are also fuel stations located on Via Cristoforo Colombo, which might be easier to reach if you’re heading to the city.

Driving around at Rome Fiumicino Airport

The airport is on the coast of Fiumicino, south west of the city of Rome. Driving in Rome can be hectic, and it’s advised that you use one of the Park & Ride facilities outside of the centre if possible.
Rome Fiumicino Airport is perfect for reaching any destination on the coast, as well as Italy’s capital city. Driving in Italy is an interesting experience. The country is full of very small, winding roads, and this doesn’t change in the city centre of Rome. Whilst the A90 ring road makes it easy to get into Rome, it can be hard to move around the centre. There are Park & Ride facilities available outside of the centre.

Rome

They say all roads lead to Rome, but it’s actually the A91 you want when leaving the airport. This historic capital is renown for it’s epic Coliseum, the Vatican, and a plethora of ancient ruins you’ll find in the areas surrounding the city. You don’t need a car if you’re only going to be exploring the centre of Rome – it’s best explored on foot!
It’s very easy to reach Rome from the airport. Merge onto the A91 when exiting the airport, then head onto Via Cristoforo Colombo. This will take you into the centre of Rome, however, driving within the city centre is usually advised against as it can become very congested. If possible, get a hotel with a car park attached, as parking can be a tricky situation too.
Driving in Italy can be very rushed, especially in the centre. Small cars pop out from T junctions as though there were no other cars on the road, and ‘cutting off’ is very common.

Civitavecchia

This city is left of Fiumicino on the western coast of Italy. It serves as a major port for getting to other Italian islands, including Sardinia. It’s easy to reach from Rome’s airport by taking the E80 out of the airport, and following the road along the coast.

Frascati

Love Italy’s foodand drink? Then Frascati could be the delicious palate cleanser you need after the bhustle and bustle of Rome. This small town is laced with vineyards and incredible local produce, which makes it well worth the drive from the city. It’s less than an hour’s drive from the city, depending on traffic, and on street parking is available.
Exit the airport as though you were driving to Follow the E80 around the city, then take exit 21-22 for Tuscolana.
