KLM flights

KLM (or Royal Dutch Airlines) are the flag carrying airline of the Netherlands. Founded in 1919, they have the distinction of being the oldest airline in the world still using its original name – in this case Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij N.V. (You can see why they shorten it to KLM). The airline is a member of the SkyTeam alliance. They're also in a partnership with Air France, whom they share a frequent-flyer program with: Flying Blue. KLM operates a fleet of 115 aircraft and fly to 145 destinations across the world, usually with a layover in their hub city of Amsterdam. KLM fly from a total of 15 UK airports. Some of these flights are operated by their subsidiaries KLM CityHopper. Other subsidiaries are Transavia and Martin Air

How to check In

With KLM you can check in at the airport (either by heading to the assigned desk or using a self-service kiosk), online or via your mobile. Online check in is open from 30 hours to 1 hour before departure on most routes, although there are some exceptions on long-haul destinations. You can either print your boarding pass, or have an electronic one sent to your chosen device. With mobile check-in you receive your boarding pass via email. Those travelling in First or Business Class, or as a Flying Blue Gold, Platinum or SkyTeam Elite Plus member can use their own dedicated check-in desk.

Seating

The seat pitch on most KLM flights is a fairly standard 30 to 35 inches. This is the distance between your seat and the one in front, so usually a higher pitch means more legroom. Seat width is usually 17.5 inches. Business class passengers can expect a 60 to 63 inch seat pitch and a seat width of 20 inches. The only exception is the Boeing 787-9 (789), which has a smaller (but still generous) seat pitch of 42 inches. You can reserve your preferred seat in advance for an extra fee.

Service on board

KLM flights have two service classes: economy and business. The majority of intercontinental flights feature personal television screens, offering a range of films and TV shows. KLM are in the process of rolling out on-board Wi-Fi throughout their fleet, and all of their Boeing 787 Dreamliners currently have it. The in-flight magazine is The Holland Herald, which offers an interesting overview of new travel destinations and interesting gadgets. Complimentary food is served on all KLM flights. On European flights this is usually a snack or sandwich. On longer flights, economy passengers have a choice of two hot meals. The food in business class is slightly more gourmet, featuring dishes created by Dutch chef Jonnie Boer. Meals end with cheese and dessert wine.

Punctuality

KLM were the world's most punctual airline in 2016, with nearly 9 out of 10 flights arriving at or before their scheduled arrival time. Out of seven airlines, they were the most punctual airline running the London to Amsterdam route.
