    Check In and Seat Assignments

Online check in is available on Air India flights from 48 to 2 hours before your scheduled departure. If you are travelling on a domestic route, you will receive a boarding pass that you can print at home. International passengers will be sent a confirmation slip, which you can present at the airport when you drop off your baggage.

Codeshare flights and flights leaving from Dhaka are not currently eligible for online check in. For these flights, please check in at the appropriate airport service desk for the airline operating your codeshare flight.

Airport check in for domestic flights closes 45 minutes prior to departure, or 60 minutes for international flights.

You can select your seat online or by contacting a customer service representative. Reservations for specific seats, whether standard or with additional legroom, are available for a fee. On flights travelling from North America, seat selection costs typically begin at $25. Seating assignments are only available on flights operated by Air India, and cannot be reserved through Air India customer service for codeshare flights. Seat selection closes two hours prior to departure for international flights, and one hour prior for domestic routes.

Carry On and Checked Baggage Allowances

All Air India passengers are invited to bring one piece of carry on luggage, which must weigh no more than 8 kg. For those flying on a Boeing or Airbus aircraft, carry-on dimensions are 55x35x25 cm, or 55x35x20 for ATR aircraft. Any carry-on luggage that exceeds the weight or dimensions will be placed in the hold and considered checked luggage.

In addition to one piece of hand luggage, you may also bring one personal item such as a purse or umbrella. Please note, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is banned on Air India flights and cannot be carried in the cabin or as checked baggage.

Checked baggage allowances vary depending upon ticket class and destination. Passengers travelling between North America and India or the UK may bring two pieces of checked luggage, weighing up to 23kg each for an economy ticket or 32kg each for business or economy class. Additional bags or overweight baggage incur extra charges. On flights between North America and India, additional baggage charges typically begin at $100 USD.

Those travelling with infants are also entitled to bring one piece of checked luggage and one stroller or car seat. Infants may not bring a carry on bag.

If you are travelling from Canada, you will likely be flying on a codeshare flight operated by Air Canada. In this case, you are subject to the baggage allowances of that airline, which may differ from those of Air India.

This rate is specific for infants who travel on your lap; those who require a seat qualify for child fares. You may bring baby food for your infant to consume during the flight, as well as a child carrier free of charge. Children between the ages of 2 and 12 sit in their own seat and pay 75% of the adult fare.

Children between the ages of 5 and 12 can fly unaccompanied on Air India flights, so long as travel does not include any codeshare flights. Proper documentation is available on the Air India website and must be filled out prior to travel. Unaccompanied minor documents must be mailed to your nearest Air India office, and must be received no less than three days before your scheduled departure.

    Travelling with Pets

Small pets including dogs, cats, and birds, may travel on Air India domestic flights in the cabin or the cargo hold. For cabin travel, the combined weight of the pet and carrier may not exceed 5kg. Any larger animals must travel in the hold, in a comfortable carrier with an absorbent mat.

Animals are not included in your checked baggage allowance, and are subject to excess luggage charges. Book your ticket early when travelling with animals, as there is a maximum of two pets per flight.

Pets may travel on international routes depending upon the regulations of the carrier flight. Proper documentation is required, and vaccination and holding times may vary between countries.

No animals are accepted on direct flights between India and the USA, with the exception of guide dogs. Some other exceptions for pet travel may apply, including flights to and from London, on which no animals may travel.
