Terminal Information – Departing

Flights to Cairns leave from the domestic terminal of Brisbane Airport. There's a small but good range of shops, from big fashion brands like Victoria's Secret and Oxford Men to souvenir shops like Australian Way. Hungry travellers will find plenty to quench their appetites, with plenty of international restaurants like Rolld Vietnamese and Wasabi Warriors. There's a Krispy Kreme too, in case you need a sugar hit. The airport has free Wi-Fi, which you can use for three hours or until you hit 500mb. There's a parents’ room near Gate 38 where you can feed and change infants. Business lounges are available for those flying with Qantas Club or Virgin Australia.

Terminal Information – Arriving

Flights from Brisbane land at the domestic terminal of Cairns Airport. It doesn't take long to get into the city from the airport, as it's only four miles away. Shuttle buses are hourly, so if you miss one you're in for a long wait. One-way tickets cost AUD $15-17* (about £7.70 to £8.75) or AUD $25-35* (about £12.85 to £18) for a return. There's a taxi rank at the airport. You can expect to pay around $25-35* (as above) to reach the city centre in a metered cab. If you're planning on doing a lot of exploring it might be worth looking into car hire at Cairns Airport: remember to compare prices first with Skyscanner. Walking into town is possible but not recommended, as the airport access road is busy and has no pavement.

Practical Information

We recommend arriving at the airport at least 90 minutes before departure. You don't need a passport to fly on domestic routes within Australia, but it's good to keep it with you as passengers can be asked to show identification for security reasons. You will definitely need it if you check in at the airport.

What to expect in Cairns

Cairns has a warmer climate than Brisbane. You can expect an average temperature of 28°C in the summer and 22°C during winter. January to March are the wettest months, so if you're heading up then you'll need to pack your umbrella. Dinner and drinks in Cairns are usually more expensive than in Brisbane, although there's not a massive price difference.
