Where to hire a car at Townsville Airport
There’s a good selection of car hire companies based at Townsville Airport. Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Redspot and Thrifty all have desks at the arrivals area inside the terminal building. Cars are picked up and dropped off at the car hire car park, which is situated at the arrivals end of the terminal.
Petrol Stations near Townsville Airport
There’s a collection of petrol stations located just three minutes’ drive from the airport terminal. A BP garage, Puma Energy and Coles Express are all clustered around Bolam Street, accessed from route 9 westbound from the airport.
Driving around Townsville Airport
From the airport it’s easy to get to a number of major routes. Route 16 forms a partial ring road around the east, north and west edges of the city. Route 9 travels east to Townsville and west to Mount St John. Route 14 is a bigger road which runs parallel to route 9. This road also heads into Townsville and, to the west, joins the A1, a major coastal highway travelling north to Cairns and south to Mackay.
Driving in Queensland is usually a very easy and pleasant experience. Cars drive on the left as they do in the UK, roads are well-maintained and signposting is good too. To drive in Australia, you need to carry both the paper and photo card parts of your driving license.

Townsville is a sunny seaside city. It sits on the Ross River too so there are lots of water based activities to enjoy including lagoon swimming, fishing and water sports. Visitors can shop at local markets, explore the arts and cultural centres along the river and head out to discover the great outdoors at Big Crystal Creek or Saunders Beach.
It takes under 10 minutes to drive from Townsville Airport to Townsville city centre, taking route 16 northbound. There are over 1000 free car parking spaces in the city centre, with all day spaces on the corner of Leichhardt Street and Eyre Street. If you do find yourself in a paid or time restricted space, regulations apply from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Girringun National Park
Girringun National Park sits north along the coast from Townsville. It’s a huge natural landscape consisting of waterfalls, an ancient volcano, rolling hills and forest. Visitors can go hiking or fishing, enjoy a barbecue or picnic and even spend the night under the stars at one of the park’s campsites.
It takes around an hour and 45 minutes to drive from Townsville Airport to Girringun National Park. Drivers should take the route 14 west from the airport to join the A1 heading north. There are car parks located around the park. Drivers should check the park website for details of any road closures prior to travelling.
Forrest Beach is a pretty, sandy beach at the northern end of Halifax Bay. It is a small and quiet place with just a handful of hotels, restaurants and cafés. The beach is a popular surfing spot and beach fishing is also possible here.
It takes around 90 minutes to travel from Townsville Airport to Forrest Beach, taking route 14 west and then the A1 north. The town is small and easy to navigate, with plenty of parking spaces.
