Terminal Information – Departing

London-City only has one terminal. The airport is designed for business travellers so is very functional, with free Wi-Fi and a few key shops. It also operates a Silent Airport policy, so no announcements are made. Keep a close eye on the departure boards.

If you’re flying from Gatwick Airport you’ll probably be departing from the North Terminal. Although some buses do stop here, it’s more likely that they’ll drop you at the South Terminal (as the Gatwick Express does). From here it’s easy to catch the free inter-terminal shuttle. The departure lounge is similar to a small scale shopping mall, with plenty of shops and eateries to keep you occupied while you wait for your gate.

At Heathrow Airport flights to Amsterdam usually depart from Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Both terminals have their own Underground and train stations, where you can catch the Heathrow Express and Piccadilly Line. Terminal 5 is known for its luxury shops, and is the home of Gordon Ramsay’s famous Plane Food restaurant. Terminal 4 also has some seriously high end stores, with the likes of Alexander McQueen and Bulgari just begging you to stop for a bit of window shopping.

Luton Airport only has one terminal, so it’s easy to get to where you need to be. There are plenty of high street shops to browse, restaurants to relax in, and a nail bar if you fancy treating yourself to a pre-holiday manicure.

Stansted Airport also has one terminal, with some fantastic shopping and dining options. You can grab an upmarket meal at James Martin’s Kitchen, enjoy something a little more relaxed at Giraffe, treat yourself to some sushi at Itsu, or just settle in with a glass of champagne at the bubbles bar.

London-Southend Airport is small but perfectly functional. There’s a duty free shop and a WHSmith, as well as a cafe and a restaurant. If you want to relax before you fly you can book into the First Class Lounge: entry costs £20.95 (£17.95 if you pre-book) and you can enjoy complementary snacks and drinks in a peaceful environment.

Terminal Information – Arriving

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is huge. Most flights from London will land at Arrivals 2 (or Arrivals 4 if you’re flying with easyJet). All of the different arrival terminals spill out into one central area, the Schiphol Plaza. From here it’s easy to find your way to the train station, taxi rank and bus stand to make your onward journey into Amsterdam.

Practical Information

Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Amsterdam. Before booking your flights check that your passport won’t expire while you’re away: if it does, you might not be allowed to leave London.

We recommend leaving plenty of time to relax at the airport. Try not to arrive any later than one hour before departure; ideally 90 minutes before. Make sure you factor in extra time for rush hour traffic and long queues at security on weekends, evenings, and school holidays.

Amsterdam is one of the few cities in the world that combines it's fascinating history with it's new modern day edge. The city is small enough to walk or cycle if you want to blend in with the locals, with a list of attractions on every corner. From its stunning canals and fantastic museums, to it's unique cafés and clubs Amsterdam has something for everyone to enjoy.
