Utrecht is a city in the central Netherlands that has been a religious center for centuries. It has a medieval old town, canals, Christian monuments and a venerable university. The iconic Domtoren, a 14th-century bell tower with city views, stands opposite the Gothic Cathedral of St. Martin on central Domplein square. The Museum Catharijneconvent shows religious art and artifacts in a former monastery.

UTRECHT Utrecht is a historic city, the ecclesiastical centre of the Low Countries. From early middle Ages. Today it’s an antique frame surrounding an increasingly modern interior, lorded over the by the tower of the Dom Cathedral, the country’s tallest church tower. The 14th century canals, once-bustling wharves and cellars now brim with chic shops, restaurants and cafés. The student population (Utrecht is home to the largest University in the country) adds spice to a once largely church-oriented community. The most appealing quarter lies between Oudergracht and Nieuwegracht and the streets around the Dom Cathedral. Hoog Catharijne is the largest indoor shopping mall in the Netherlands. And the Jaarbeurs is a well-known Exhibition and Congress centre.

A busy university city with a combination of quaint and historic neighborhoods and modern buildings. Easy to reach via train from almost anywhere in the Netherlands. We spent several hours here, as a day trip from Rotterdam. Just when we thought we had seen the most picturesque Dutch cities, we found Utrecht and were pleasantly surprised.

Charming Dutch city with a beautiful medieval town center. Easy to get to by train, and well connected to the rest of the Netherlands and nearby Belgium and Germany. Also home to Utrecht University, one of the Netherlands oldest and largest universities.
