Terminal Information
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has just one terminal, divided into three sections – Departure Halls 1, 2 and 3. KLM flights to Brussels depart from Departure Hall 1. Passengers on European flights are advised to check-in at least two hours before their scheduled flight departure time. However, online and self-service check-in is also available and can speed up the process.
The airport offers a range of facilities for passengers. There’s free, unlimited Wi-Fi available throughout the terminal building. You can also pay to upgrade to a faster, premium service. For passengers without their own internet device, there’s an Internet Centre located in the departures lounge. Here you’ll find PCs with internet access, available for a fee. These centres provide device charging, printing, photocopying and scanning services too.
In the departures lounge there’s also a range of shopping, eating and drinking outlets. Whether you’re looking for last minute holiday essentials or just a bit of retail therapy, there is a great selection of shops at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, including Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria’s Secret and Rolex to name but a few. For food and drink, there are cafés, bars, a pizzeria, a seafood and wine bar and even an Irish pub.
Brussels International Airport
Brussels International Airport is located 11 kilometres northeast of Brussels city centre. There’s just one terminal at the airport, with arriving passengers entering the building at level 2. The arrivals hall offers a range of facilities. It’s home to an Information Desk where you can get advice on onward travel options and local attractions, there’s free Wi-Fi available for up to one hour and a selection of shopping and food outlets.
Car hire desks are also located in the arrivals hall. Companies including Avis, Budget, Thrifty, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar and Enterprise all provide a car hire service from the airport.
If you choose to take public transport from the airport to your final destination, you’ll find buses departing from outside the terminal on the ground floor and a train station on level -1. If you’re travelling into Brussels city centre, the quickest bus route is the Airport Line, a 30 minute express service. These MIVB/STIB buses depart from Platform C and it’s cheaper to buy your ticket from self-service machines before boarding, rather than from the driver. Trains are a little quicker, taking just 17 minutes to reach the city centre. Six trains per hour leave the airport and tickets can be purchased from yellow kiosks in the station.
Taxis are also available from the ground floor. A standard fare from the airport to the city centre is around €45.00 and you should only use licensed taxis recognisable by their blue and yellow emblem.
What to Expect in Brussels
Weather in Brussels is pretty unpredictable. Summer temperatures often reach the mid-twenties and winters are fairly mild. The city gets a fair amount of rainfall so it’s wise to pack an umbrella, regardless of the season you’re travelling in.
The cost of living in Brussels and Amsterdam is more or less the same. You can expect to pay around €60.00 for a mid-range three course meal for two, €3.50 for a bottle of beer and €2.10 for a one way journey on public transport.
