Jetstar Airways, Qantas, QantasLink, Tigerair Australia and Virgin Australia all fly to Brisbane Airport from Cairns.

Terminal Information – Departing

This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.

Flights to Brisbane depart from the domestic terminal (T2). This terminal is home to numerous souvenir and gift shops, selling everything from chocolates and duty free goodies to merino wool clothing and Aussie handicrafts. There are plenty of places to grab a bite, whether you're looking for a healthy salad or a hearty Italian meal. Half an hour of free Wi-Fi is available in the domestic departure lounge for every passenger. If you need more internet access it costs $3* (just over £1.50) per hour/60MB, $6* (just over £3) for 24 hours/160 MB, or $30* (just overe £15.50) for 7 days/1.2 GB.

Terminal Information – Arriving

Brisbane Airport is about 12 miles away from the CBD. Flights from Cairns land in the domestic terminal. The airport has excellent transport connections. The Airtrain runs between both the domestic and international terminals and on to the city centre. If you book your tickets in advance you can save up to 15% on the ticket price. One-way tickets usually cost $16* (about £8.35) while return tickets are $30* (about £15.60). Shuttle buses are available with Con-X-ion to Brisbane CBD and other destinations like the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. You can book your tickets in advance, or upon arrival at the airport .Taxis are available from outside the domestic arrivals hall: expect to pay around $35* (just over £18). Car hire is also available from the airport.

Practical Information

You don't need a passport to fly on domestic routes within Australia. You may be asked to show photographic identification when you check in and before boarding, so we recommend carrying your passport anyway. Try to arrive at the airport no later than one hour before scheduled departure.

What to expect in Brisbane

There's no time difference between Cairns and Brisbane. Prices are similar in both places: dinner for two is generally cheaper in Brisbane, while beer is more expensive. Brisbane is colder than Cairns, with an average temperature of 15 °C during the winter and 26°C during summer. March to May (autumn) is the best time to visit Brisbane, with mild temperatures and great hotel deals. Most of Brisbane's festivals take place in winter (Out of the Box, Ekka, Brisbane Marathon Festival) and spring (KiteFest, Brisbane Festival, Valley Fiesta, Brisbane Writer's Festival, Brisbane International Film Festival), so we recommend booking your accommodation well in advance if this is when you're planning to visit.
