Terminal Information – Departing
This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.
Flights to Doha usually depart from terminal 2. Doha isn't in the European Union, so you can enjoy duty free discounts on most of your shopping at the airport. As well as a Biza Tax & Duty Free shop, terminal 2 has plenty of places where you can splash your cash. Pick up some kids toys from Zoodle, grab a new outfit at Next, or invest in some shiny new gadgets at Dixon's Travel. There's also a Boots for last minute toiletries and a WH Smith for picking up some poolside reading. Dining options at the airport range from coffee shops (Caffe Nero, Caffe Ritazza) to gastropubs (The Spinning Jenny, the Observatory Bar). There's an Escape Lounge: entry costs £21* per person if reserved in advance or £25* if you pay on the door. One hour of free Wi-Fi is available for every passenger, perfect for checking the weather forecast or double checking the name of your Doha hotel.
Terminal Information – Arriving
The best way to get around Doha is with your own vehicle. Car hire is available from Doha Airport's ground transportation centre (across from the main terminal). Companies operating from the airport include Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Budget and Al Muftah. Demand is usually high, so it's best to reserve your vehicle in advance. If you don't want to (or are unable to) drive, you can take a taxi from the airport to the city centre. Cabs in Doha are metered.
Practical Information
You need a passport with at least six months validity to fly from Manchester to Doha. British citizens don't need to apply for a visa in advance, but can get one on arrival at the airport. You'll need to keep your credit or debit card handy as cash isn't accepted. Remember to inform your bank that you're travelling to avoid any embarrassing glitches.
What to expect in Doha
Doha is two hours ahead of Manchester and its currency is the Qatari riyal. Qatar is a Muslim country so it's important to behave conservatively. Women should cover knees and shoulders while in public, and public displays of affection are frowned upon. It's illegal to bring pork into the country, and it's also illegal to drink or be drunk in public. You're allowed to drink in hotel bars, so this is where you'll find the city's nightlife options. Doha has a desert climate, so it's very hot: especially during summer when temperatures can reach 38°C.
