British Airways, United and Virgin Atlantic fly to Newark Airport.

Terminal Information

London Heathrow Airport

Passengers flying to New York should ensure they arrive at Heathrow at least 3 hours before the flight departure time. You can either check in online in advance, which is recommended for a streamlined check in process or head to the check in desks at the airport.

There are 4 terminals at Heathrow Airport, all offering a great choice of shops and restaurants, 4 hours of free Wi-Fi, currency desks, premium lounges and mobile phone charging points.  

United Airlines flights depart from Terminal 2, American Airlines, Delta and Atlantic all depart from Terminal 3, Kuwait flights depart from Terminal and British Airways have an exclusive terminal at Heathrow; Terminal 5. Some of the gates can be a 15 minute walk from the central departures lounge in the terminals so once you arrive in the lounge its worth checking to see which gate your flight will depart from.

The terminals have designer brands of Alexander McQueen, Boss, Bulgari, Cartier all showcasing the latest fashion next to the high street favourites Mango and Zara. Food options across the terminals range from the quick snacks to fine dining from Ca’puccino, The Gorgeous Kitchen, Pride by Fullers, Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food, Giraffe and many more.

New York John F. Kennedy Airport

New York John F. Kennedy Airport is 18 miles south east of New York City. There are 6 terminals at JFK Airport; Delta Air Lines, Kuwait Airways and Virgin Atlantic flights from Heathrow arrive into Terminal 4, British Airways arrive into Terminal 7 and American Airlines arrive into Terminal 8.

There are a wide variety of onward travel options from John F. Kennedy Airport. The AirTrain Shuttle service offers transportation between the airport terminals, car parking lots and hotel shuttle services free of charge, 24 hours a day. It also connects to the subway (A, E, J and Z lines) and Long Island Rail Road, from which you can reach New York City.  Bus services depart from the Central Terminal Area bus stop which is located at the former terminal 6 which you can reach using the AirTrain Shuttle.

Each terminal’s arrivals hall has car rental desks available for those renting a car. After collecting the keys you will need to take the AirTrain Shuttle service to get the car at the Federal Circle Station.

A set taxi fare is in operation for those taking licenced cabs from JFK Airport to Manhattan, this is $52 excluding tolls, tax and tips (tolls are $5, a customary tip is $6 and state taxi is $0.50). A typical journey can take anywhere from 35 to 90 minutes depending on traffic and the time of day you are travelling.

Newark Airport

Newark Airport is actually located in New Jersey and 15 miles from New York City, despite this depending on your mode of transport and destination it can be quicker to reach NYC from Newark Airport than JFK. Newark Liberty International Airport has three terminals, British Airways, United and Virgin Atlantic flights from Heathrow arrive into Terminal B.

A free AirTrain shuttle service is available from the terminals at Newark Airport to the New Liberty International Airport Station. From here there are rail connections to destinations in New Jersey and New York such as New York Penn Station, Newark Penny Station and Secaucus Junction.

If you are travelling into New Jersey there are bus services operated by New Jersey Transit (NJT), Olympia Trails operates services into New York City destinations including the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Grand Central Terminal.

Car hire is available from Newark Airport, with companies such as Advantage, National and Enterprise located at the airport. The car hire desks are located in the P2 and P3 stations and you will need to take the AirTrain Shuttle service to reach them.

Practical Information

British passport holders do not need a visa to travel of up to 90 days to the US due to the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) which is in place. You will however need to get authorisation in order to enter the US before your flight. This is known as an ESTA and should be completed through the official Electronic System for Travel Authorisation website. An ESTA costs $14 and is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever occurs first.
