Terminal Information

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is home to just one terminal divided into three main sections. Passengers on European flights are advised to check-in at least two hours before their scheduled flight departure time. However, passengers using self-service or mobile check in will be able to skip the queues.

The airport offers a variety of facilities for passengers. There’s unlimited Wi-Fi connection available throughout the building with a faster service available for a fee. Passengers will also find a great selection of shops including a duty free store, the majority of these are in the main Schiphol Plaza, before security. Food and drink outlets are plentiful and varied. You can enjoy a quick bite to eat at McDonald’s or Starbucks, a relaxed drink at Murphy’s Irish Pub, sushi at East bar & bites, or traditional Dutch cuisine at the Dutch Kitchen.

Manchester Airport

There are three terminals at Manchester Airport. EasyJet flights from Amsterdam arrive to Terminal 1 whilst KLM and Flybe flights arrive to Terminal 3. The arrivals hall in both terminals offers convenience stores, cafés where you can pick up a quick bite to eat, an information desk, cash machines and internet kiosks. A free Wi-Fi connection is also available for up to 60 minutes.

Passengers can choose from a variety of onward travel options. Car hire offices are located in the Car Rental Village which is accessed by a free shuttle bus, departing from outside all terminals every 10 minutes. Companies based at the airport include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, National and Sixt.

Taxis are available outside both terminal buildings at a designated and well-signposted taxi rank. Taxis are usually available 24 hours a day but if you are arriving at the airport late at night, you may want to call and pre-book a cab with one of the taxi companies listed on the airport website to avoid a wait.

Public transport options into the city centre include trains, trams and buses. There’s a train station at the airport, accessed from both Terminals 1 and 3 via the Skylink Walkway. Trains take around 20 minutes to reach the city centre and run until around 23:00. The Metrolink tram station is located right next to the train station. Trams depart regularly throughout the day and tickets are available from self-service machines on the platform. If you are familiar with Manchester, the cheapest way to travel is often on local bus routes. National Express services to other cities also depart from the airport.

What to Expect in Manchester

Prices in Amsterdam and Manchester are more or less the same. In Manchester, a mid-range three course meal for two will cost around £45.00, a bottle of beer will cost around £3.75 and a one way journey on public transport will set you back about £2.50. Taxi travel and supermarket shopping in Manchester are often a little cheaper than in Amsterdam.  

You may find that it’s a degree or two warmer in Manchester than in Amsterdam. Summer temperatures in the city regularly reach the low twenties and the mercury rarely drops below freezing, even in winter months. Manchester is renowned as a rainy city, but you’ll probably find that it’s a little drier than Amsterdam.
