Air New Zealand offer direct flights between Auckland and Queenstown.

Terminal Information – Departing

This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.

Shops available within Auckland International Airport’s domestic terminal include Ray Ban, Karen Walker, and Relay. There’s also AirGo convenience for magazines and books and Travelpharm for over-the-counter medicine.

Auckland Airport has plenty of places to grab a pre-flight snack or something to eat. Wishbone offers light and healthy bites while Shaky Isles offers pies, pizzas, and sandwiches. Alternatively, Hub Convenience offers drinks and snacks along with travel adapters and other useful bits and bobs. For a pre-flight cup of coffee, there’s Takeoff Espresso, The River Café, and organic coffee specialists Alice & George. Most restaurants and fast food outlets, like Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds, also serve coffee. If you need something stronger, the Bach Alehouse offers a selection of cold beers as does The River Café. Free Wi-Fi is available for 30 minutes at a time. Paid access is available if you want to stay online for longer. 

Terminal Information – Arriving

Getting from Queenstown Airport to your hotel or accommodation is easy.

· The Connectabus connects the airport with Central Queenstown, and its route means it goes close to most of the major hotels. Tickets cost $12*, and the bus runs every 15 minutes.

· Taxis are available from outside of the airport.

· Arranging car hire at Queenstown Airport is a third possibility. You can either organise the car hire when you get to the airport or book in online before you arrive. You’ll find plenty of car hire companies inside the arrivals terminal including Europcar, Avis, Budget, Jucy, Ezi Car Rental, Thrifty, Hertz, and Ace Rental Cars.

Practical Information

As this is a national flight, you should aim to arrive at Auckland International at least 90 minutes before your flight to Queenstown is due to depart. Air New Zealand accept the following forms of photo identification for domestic flights: passport, driver’s licence, Airpoints or Koru card, birth certificate, NZ Community Services Card, or a credit card. If you're a British citizen, bring your passport.

What to expect in Queenstown

Queenstown is usually colder than Auckland. Expect temperatures of around 16°C in January compared to 20°C in Auckland. In July, there’s a similar difference. Queenstown is usually around 4°C during the day while Auckland remains slightly warmer at 11°C. As well as being famous for its breath-taking natural beauty, Queenstown is also famous for being the home of the first commercial bungee jump, and this makes it a bucket-list destination for adrenaline addicts. If bungee jumping isn’t your thing, there’s also hiking, skiing, snowboarding, parachuting, and skydiving. If you’d prefer something a little more relaxing, pay a visit to some of the area's vineyards. Queenstown is home to some of New Zealand's best Pinot Noir, so settling in for a glass of that is definitely a must for vino lovers.
