Terminal Information
London Heathrow
London Heathrow Airport is located 14 miles west of London city centre. British Airways fly from their exclusive terminal at Heathrow, Terminal 5. You should arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight to Hamburg is scheduled to depart.
Terminal 5 has an extensive selection of facilities for passengers. There is a currency exchange desk, internet access and a range of shopping outlets. Passengers can pick up holiday essentials at Boots and WHSmith or shop for luxury items at Gucci, Harrods or Hamleys. There’s a similar variety of food options with Huxleys Restaurant and Bar, Pret A Manger, a Gordon Ramsey restaurant and Japanese cuisine at Wagamama.
London Gatwick
London Gatwick Airport is situated 30 miles south of London city centre. The airport has both a North and a South Terminal. EasyJet flights to Hamburg depart from the South Terminal. Passengers are advised to arrive three hours before their scheduled flight departure time.
The departures lounge in the South Terminal has a McDonald’s, Caffe Nero, Giraffe, Frankie & Benny’s and a Wetherspoon pub. Shops include Cath Kidston, Harrods, Accessorize, Boots and a duty free store. There’s also a currency exchange desk and a premium lounge, which is available for a fee.
London Luton Airport
London Luton Airport is 35 miles north of London city centre. There is just one terminal at the airport. Passengers can purchase a Fast Track pass to speed their journey through security and will find a range of facilities in the departures lounge.
There’s a currency exchange desk, gaming stations, internet stations and free Wi-Fi. Food options include Pret A Manger, Frankie & Benny’s and Benugo. For a little retail therapy there’s Boots, Dixons Travel, Accessorize and a WHSmith.
Hamburg Airport
Hamburg Airport is located around 8 kilometres north of Hamburg city centre. There are two terminals at the airport. Both British Airways and EasyJet flights arrive to Terminal 1. The arrivals area is located on the ground floor of the terminal building and there’s a taxi rank right outside.
In the arrivals hall, passengers will find a range of shops and eateries. There’s also a pharmacy, cash machines and the Airport Office where you can get information on local attractions and onward travel options. Car hire desks are located in Terminal 2, within the same building as Terminal 1 and very easy to access. Companies include Avis, Sixt, Buchbinder, Enterprise, Europcar, National, Hertz and Thrifty.
If you’re planning on travelling by public transport to the city centre, you can buy tickets from the Airport Office. The quickest option is the S1 S-Bahn metro train which leaves the airport every 10 minutes and reaches the city centre in just 25 minutes. The station is located directly in front of the terminal buildings.
What to Expect in Hamburg
Hamburg is one of the northernmost cities in Germany and enjoys a cool climate. Temperatures reach the low twenties in summer months and fall to around freezing come winter. Despite the colder winter weather, snow is infrequent. The city is also a lot less rainy than London.
The cost of living and holidaying in Hamburg is much cheaper than in London. A mid-range three course meal for two will cost around €50.00*, a bottle of beer will cost €3.25* and a cappuccino will set you back around €2.70*. Public transport and travelling by taxi are also cheaper in Hamburg than in London.
