Terminal Information
Southampton Airport
There is just one terminal at Southampton Airport and check-in desks are easily located as you enter the building. Passengers on flights to Amsterdam are advised to check-in 90 minutes before their scheduled flight departure time. Flybe offers online or self-service check-in which will save you time at the airport.
As Southampton Airport is compact, it’s a short journey from check-in to the gates and airport aims to have passengers waiting no more than five minutes when passing through security.
In the departures lounge passengers will find a selection of food, drink and shopping options. There’s The Olive Tree café bar, Costa Coffee and The Globe Bar & Kitchen for a bite to eat and WHSmith and World Duty Free for a little bit of retail therapy. The airport offers a Shop and Collect service free of charge and free Wi-Fi for up to four hours.
The Priority Lounge is a quieter space in which to spend the time before your flight. It’s available to all passengers for a fee of £15* and can be booked in advance or at the lounge reception on the day. The lounge offers complimentary food and drink, charging points for laptops and mobiles, desks if you need to work before your flight and plenty of comfortable places to sit and relax.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is situated 9 kilometres southwest of Amsterdam city centre. The airport has just one terminal, divided into four sections. All of these sections lead into the same central arrivals hall where passengers will find internet kiosks, bars, cafés, shops and cash machines.
There is a good selection of public transport options from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Amsterdam city centre. The airport train station can be found downstairs from the arrivals hall. Trains to Amsterdam Central (Amsterdam’s most central station) leave regularly and take just 15 minutes. Tickets are available from self-service kiosks before you reach the station platforms.
A number of local bus routes travel from the airport into the city centre. However, for visitors unfamiliar with Amsterdam, the easiest option is the 197 Airport Express shuttle bus. It stops at a number of central Amsterdam locations and leaves from the B9 platform every 15 minutes.
Car hire from Amsterdam Airport is another option, particularly if you’re travelling to the outskirts of the city or surrounding areas where traffic is less congested. Offices for Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Europcar can be found in the Arrivals 3 area of the arrivals hall.
What to Expect in Amsterdam
Visitors to Amsterdam will find that prices are generally a little lower than in Southampton. A mid-range three course meal for two will cost around €60.00, a one-way ticket on public transport €2.90* and a regular cappuccino €2.70*. If you’re self-catering, you’ll find big savings on beer and wine bought from the supermarket as prices can be almost half what they are back in Southampton.
