Aegean Airlines offer direct flights to Athens from Birmingham. These flights are available on a seasonal basis, usually during the summer.
Terminal Information – Departing
Birmingham Airport has one terminal. After security there's a good range of places to shop, eat, or relax. The airport's range of high-street shops includes Superdry, Hugo Boss and Next. There are also plenty of airport favourites like World Duty Free, WH Smith and Boots. Dining options range from quick and easy (Deli Hub, Costa) to places where you can linger a little longer over your food (Giraffe, Wetherspoons). You can kick off your holiday in style with a glass of fizz at Blanc et Noir champagne bar or treat yourself to a manicure from Cloud Nails. For added luxury, check into one of the airport lounges. Prices start at £21.99* per person and gives you the opportunity to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the departure gates.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Athens Airport is around 17 miles from the city centre. Public transport is widely available with four express buses and a Metro serving the airport. Metro and bus tickets are transferable and can be used for up to 90 minutes after you validate them. Not validating your ticket can result in a massive fine, so don't skip this step. One-way Metro tickets from the airport to the city centre cost €8* (about £6.20) while express bus tickets cost €5* (about £3.90). There's a taxi rank outside the arrivals area. During the day taxis offer a flat fare of €38* (about £29.50) which rises to €50* (just under £39) at night. Car hire from Athens Airport is also available and provided by a number of major agencies.
Practical Information
You need a valid passport to fly to Greece from the UK. Try to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight is set to depart, giving yourself extra time if you're travelling during the school holidays.
What to expect in Athens
Athens is two hours ahead of Birmingham and the currency is the Euro (€). Athens gets extremely hot during the summer, with an average temperature of 29°C: pack plenty of sunscreen and bring a hat. If you're planning on doing a lot of sightseeing we recommend visiting during spring or autumn. Winter can be quite chilly, with an average temperature of 10°C. Athens is slightly cheaper than Birmingham: a three course meal for two people in a mid-range restaurant generally costs around £30*. Taxis are much cheaper in Athens too, so if you do decide to hire a car there's no problem leaving it at the hotel (if you want to indulge in an ouzo or two).
