Aberdeen Airport is small but well formed. The one terminal has a good range of useful shops, including World Duty Free, WHSmith, and Boots. There are a few coffee shops, restaurants, and bars if you're feeling peckish, and a small art gallery featuring work by local artists. The airport also has a Servisair Lounge, where you can enjoy complimentary snacks, drinks and Wi-Fi. If you book in advance, entry costs less than £20.

Terminal Information – Arriving

It's no hassle finding your way into the city from Amsterdam's sprawling airport. Every flight arrival filters through Schiphol Plaza, a massive arrivals area complete with refreshment stalls. This is where you'll find trains, buses, taxis and the car rental desks. If you're going to hire a car from Amsterdam airport, remember to check and compare prices first with Skyscanner.

The train station is underneath the plaza. Trains are fast, convenient, and inexpensive: it only costs €3.90* (about £2.75) for a train into Amsterdam Central Station. This is if you pre-book your ticket at one of the machines: prices go up if you decide to buy on the train. If your hotel is in Museumplein or Leidseplein, take The Airport Express bus. Tickets cost €5* (about £3.65). It should take about half an hour to reach your destination. If you prefer to take a taxi you can expect to pay €40-50 (about £28 -35). The price will depend how far you're going, so always discuss prices with the driver before he sets off.

Practical Information

British citizens need a valid passport to fly to Amsterdam. It should be valid for the full duration of your stay. We recommend arriving at the airport no later than 90 minutes before your flight is due to depart. This will give you plenty of time to get through security during busy periods, with some time to relax in the departure lounge afterwards.

What to expect in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one hour ahead of Aberdeen, and the currency is the Euro (€). Amsterdam is less expensive than Aberdeen. You can enjoy a three course meal for two for less than £45*, although the price of alcohol is similar to what you would find in Scotland. Although Amsterdam has a sleazy reputation, due to its red light district, it's actually a very respectable city. Soft drugs may be tolerated, but they are definitely illegal: if you get caught with marijuana outside a designated coffee shop you could find yourself in trouble with the police.
