Airlines that fly from London to Tehran
British Airways and Iran Air both offer direct flights to Tehran-Imam Khomeini from London-Heathrow. There are currently no flights to Tehran from London's other airports.
Terminal Information – Departing
This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.
Iran Air flights depart from terminal 3 while British Airways flights leave from terminal 5. Both terminals have a good range of high end and high street shops, perfect for making the most of your duty free allowance. Terminal 5 is known for its high-end restaurants, which include Gordon Ramsay's Plane Food.
Terminal Information – Arriving
It's cheap and easy to reach the centre of Tehran by bus or taxi. Buses run between the airport and Azadi Square. The buses also call at Haram-e-Motahhar Metro Station, where you can hop on the Red Line to downtown. Bus tickets cost 20 thousand* rial (about 45p). Airport taxis operate at a fixed rate of 60 to 65 thousand* rial (roughly £1.40 to £1.50).
Practical Information
We recommend arriving at Heathrow at least two hours before your flight is scheduled to depart. British nationals need a visa to visit Iran. Women and girls older than nine need to wear a headscarf in their visa application photo. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you submit your application form. If your passport has any Israeli stamps, or evidence that you've visited Israel, you'll be denied entry. Iran doesn't recognise dual nationality: if you are an Iranian dual national you will need to enter the country on your Iranian passport. The same is true if your father or husband is Iranian. Only bring your Iranian passport: there's a risk your British one could be confiscated. Note that Iran is a strict Muslim country, and has some extreme laws regarding dress and behaviour. We recommend reading the UK government travel advice before setting off.
What to expect in Tehran
Tehran is three and a half hours ahead of London. The local currency is the Iranian rial. Tehran is an excellent destination for budget travellers, as consumer prices are much lower than in London. You can enjoy a three-course meal for two for less than £15*, while taxis cost a tiny fraction of the price you'd pay back home. Tehran has a more extreme climate than London, with scorching summers and mild winters. The summer average is 30°C (although it's been known to approach 40°C during July and August) while the winter average is just 4°C. It's been known to drop to around 0°C in January and February, so do pack your winter coat.
