KLM is the only airline providing flights between London and Durham. Flights depart from either London Heathrow or London City Airport and fly via Amsterdam.  

Terminal Information

London City Airport

There’s just one terminal at London City Airport, which is located around six miles east of London city centre. Check-in desks open around two hours before each flight’s scheduled departure time. However, passengers on KLM flights are advised that they can check-in 15 minutes before their scheduled departure time if they’re carrying just hand luggage and 30 minutes before if they have luggage to check-in.

The airport is home to a few shops, including Boots before security and WHSmith in the departure lounge. There’s a duty free store offering a Collect on Return service for any items you’d rather not take with you on your flight. The departure lounge is also home to Pret A Manger, Panopolis and internet stations with a high speed, pay as you go service. If you are travelling with your own mobile device, there’s free and unlimited Wi-Fi connection available throughout the building.

London Heathrow

London Heathrow Airport is located 14 miles west of London city centre. The airport has four terminals, with KLM flights to Durham via Amsterdam leaving from Terminal 4. Check-in desks for Terminal 4 are located on the first floor.

In the departures lounge, passengers will find a range of facilities. There’s unlimited Wi-Fi available free of charge, and a faster service available for a fee. Shops include Boots, Burberry and Alexander McQueen, and there’s a similarly varied selection of food outlets with options such as Costa Coffee, Café Rouge and Bridge Bar & Lounge.

Terminal 4 also has a premium lounge, open to all passengers for a fee. The lounge provides complimentary food and drink throughout the day as well as a quiet space in which to relax or work in the time before your flight.

Durham Airport

Durham Tees Valley Airport is located around 25 miles south of Durham city centre and 10 miles south west of Middlesbrough. The airport is compact, with just one terminal. In the arrivals hall, after baggage reclaim, passengers will find car hire desks for companies including Avis, Budget, Hertz and Enterprise as well as free a Wi-Fi internet connection for up to 30 minutes.

If you’re planning on taking public transport for your onward journey, there are local buses stopping right outside and Darlington train station, providing regular services into Durham, York and Newcastle, is just six miles away.

Also outside the terminal building, there’s a dedicated taxi rank. If there doesn’t happen to be a taxi waiting at the rank, you can go to the booking desk in the main terminal or call 1AB Taxis, the airport’s taxi partners, directly.

Practical Information

You don’t usually need to carry your passport when flying within the UK. However, as KLM flights from London to Durham stop in Amsterdam, you should take a passport valid for both outbound and return journeys.
