Virgin Atlantic, Delta and British Airways all provide direct flights from London to Atlanta, Georgia. All three of these airlines depart from London Heathrow Airport.

Terminal Information

London Heathrow

There are four passenger terminals at London Heathrow. Virgin Atlantic flights to Atlanta depart from Terminal 3, Delta flights depart from Terminal 4 and British Airways flights depart from Terminal 5. The airport advises passengers on long haul flights to check in at least three hours before their scheduled flight departure time. Check in desks for Terminal 3 are located on the ground floor, for Terminal 4 they’re on the first floor and, for Terminal 5 they’re on the top floor.

There’s a great selection of passenger facilities throughout all three of these terminals. There’s free, unlimited Wi-Fi available, with a faster service available for a fee, as well as computer kiosks with internet access in various locations around the airport. You’ll also find a duty free store, currency exchange and a variety of food, drink and shopping outlets in each of the terminals. There are high street and designer brand shops as well as fast food restaurants, coffee shops, restaurants and pubs.

All three terminals also offer a premium lounge, available to passengers for a fee. Premium lounges provide complimentary food and drink and a quiet space in which to spend the time before your flight.

Atlanta Airport

Atlanta Airport (also known as Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport) is located seven miles south of Atlanta city centre. It is one of the world’s busiest airports and it’s home to two terminals, domestic and international.

In the arrivals hall, passengers will find an information desk and free Wi-Fi. Outside the terminal building there are various coloured zones which will help you to find the onward travel option you’re looking for. Here you’ll find taxi services and airport shuttle buses.

The majority of facilities are located at the domestic terminal, which you can access via a free 15 minute shuttle ride from red Zone 3. At the domestic terminal, there are a variety of shops and cafés as well as the MARTA train and bus service, linking the airport to Atlanta city centre. This shuttle bus also takes you to the Rental Car Center where you’ll find offices for Advantage, Budget, Avis, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Sixt, to name but a few.

Practical Information

As part of the US’s Visa Waiver Program (VWP) British citizens don’t need a visa to travel to the US for tourist visits of up to 90 days. However, if you’re taking advantage of the VWP, you’ll need to register your travel plans with the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) at least 72 hours before you depart the UK. Via an online platform, you’ll enter flight details and information about where you’ll be staying upon arrival in the US.

What to Expect in Atlanta

Atlanta enjoys warm temperatures and moderate rainfall throughout the year. Temperatures regularly reach into the low thirties during summer months and still maintain highs of around 13 degrees in winter months.
