Airlines that fly from Dublin to Kuala Lumpur

Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM, Turkish, Aer Lingus and Emirates have non-direct routes from Dublin to Kuala Lumpur.

The stopover cities for this route are usually London and Abu Dhabi. If you would like to take the shortest route possible, make sure you're flying on a route from Dublin, straight to Abu Dhabi, then join a connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur.

Terminal Information - Departing

The terminal you will be departing from depends on who you are flying with. The majority of airlines flying to Abu Dhabi will be departing from Terminal 1. If you are flying on a connecting service with Aer Lingus, you will be flying from Terminal 2.

Terminal 1 is the bigger terminal of the 2 at Dublin Airport. Once you arrive, you'll have to make your way through security, then walk through duty free into landside. Duty free here is expansive, so feel free to stock up on your favourite spirits prior to joining your connecting flight. However, you may want to check the liquid regulations for connecting flights through Abu Dhabi – occasionally, duty free over 100ml from the first airport cannot be transported to the final flight.

If you're hungry, you'll find the traditional Irish breakfast being served at breakfast, lunch and dinner in both terminals. There are healthier options in Dublin Airport too, and plenty of places to get caffeinated (Irish coffees are perfectly acceptable too). Restaurants and shops typically open and close with the first and last flights of the day.

Dixons, Boots and WHSmith are also on hand for picking up last minute bits and pieces. If you want to really kick back for your holiday, access to the Executive lounges in terminals 1 and 2 costs €20 for 3 hours – totally worth it if you need to catch up on some R&R.

Terminal Information – Arriving

There are 2 terminals within Kuala Lumpur Airport – KLIA1 and KLIA 2. Kuala Lumpur is one of the biggest airports in Asia, and it's very popular for stopovers, so it can get hectic in busy periods. Occasionally, there will be a small queue at passport control, but the airport generally runs smoothly.

Transport to Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur airport is 55km away from the city, and there is little surrounding the airport. To get to the city, you can take the taxi, train or a bus. It costs as little as 80 Malaysian Ringgit (€17) to get to the city, but it's cheaper to use public transport.

The KLIA Express train departs from Level 1 in KLIA1 and Level 2 in KLIA2, departing at 15-30 minute intervals throughout the day. The journey takes less than 30 minutes, and it's usually faster than driving through traffic. You can buy your tickets in advance online, or at the airport for 55 Malaysian Ringgit. The trains go straight to KL Sentral – the main station for public transport in Kuala Lumpur.

The bus is the most affordable way to get into the city. It costs 10 Malaysian Ringgit (less than €2), and takes an hour – if you are departing from KLIA1. If you are departing form KLIA2, there are far more bus services – including the Air Asia Skybus, the Aerobus and Shuttle services. These all cost around the 10 Ringgit mark to get into KL Sentral.

Practical Information

You will need to arrive 3 hours prior to your flight time for flights to Kuala Lumpur, as it's an international flight. You'll also need to make sure all liquids are stowed away into a clear, resealable plastic bag, and all electronics have enough power to be switched on at security.

In Malaysia, they use the Malaysian Ringgit. You can easily order this to be picked up at Dublin Airport, or you can pick it up on arrival in Kuala Lumpur.

Irish citizens do not need a Visa for visiting Kuala Lumpur, if their stay is under 3 months.

What to expect in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is bustling international city, with influences from all of Asia streaming into it's neighbourhoods. Imagine the colour and festivals of Thailand, the skyscrapers of Singapore and all of the incredible food from Southeast Asia (as well as a handful of influences from the Western expats that make it their home!).
