Birmingham Airport

Birmingham Airport is a single terminal airport 6 miles southeast of Birmingham city centre. It is recommended that you arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight to Munich is scheduled to depart. Check in options with Lufthansa include online, mobile and self-service check in at the airport. Online check in opens from 23 hours before your departure time, allowing you to skip the queues at the airport and go straight through to security. If you are travelling with hold luggage you can take it to the Lufthansa Quick Check-in Bag Drop desk to check it in.

The departures lounge at Birmingham Airport has a wide choice of places to eat and drink. This includes Costa, Giraffe, Deli Hub, Burger King, All Bar One and Blanc et Noir Champagne and Wine Bar.

Shopping opportunities in departures feature popular fashion brands such as Next, Victoria Secrets and Superdry as well as the airport essentials WH Smith, Boots and World Duty Free. Pre-trip pampering is available from Cloud Nails Salon which has a selection of OPI manicures and pedicures.

Munich Airport

Munich Airport is located 40km north of the city centre of Munich, Germany. There are two terminal and Lufthansa flights from Birmingham arrive into Terminal 2 at Munich Airport.

Onward travel options from the airport are plentiful with great connections to both Munich and the wider Bavaria area. The Flughafen Railway Station is on the grounds of the airport in the Munich Airport Centre (MAC) between the two terminals which is easily located by following the green ‘S’ signs across a covered walkway. S-Bahn train services run every 10 minutes with a journey time of 45 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at machines in Terminal 2 and the ticket counter in the MAC.

If you plan to hire a car from Munich Airport there is a car rental centre outside of Terminal 1 which is a short walk from Terminal 2. Car hire companies represented here include Thrifty, Hertz and Buchbinder. Munich is a 30 minute drive via the E53 which is easily accessed when leaving the airport.

What to expect in Munich

The costs of visiting Munich are typically cheaper than Birmingham for most of the year, especially when it comes to German beers and authentic German food. During Oktoberfest prices can increase significantly as hotels in Munich can double in price and booking in advance is recommended.
