Birmingham Airport has just one terminal. The departure lounge is well equipped with fashion stores, pharmacies, duty free and newsagents. There's also a Cloud Nails spa for a pre-holiday treat. Places to eat include Burger King, Pret a Manger and Frankie & Benny's as well as popular pub chains All Bar One and Wetherspoons. You can also grab a quick sandwich from the likes of M&S Simply Food and Boots, if you fancy a takeaway on the 'plane. Flybe customers can pay to use the Aspire or No.1 Traveller lounges, both of which offer a quiet and comfortable place to relax before your flight. Both lounges have a range of complimentary food and drink as well as high speed Wi-Fi. Speaking of internet, Birmingham Airport offers free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal building. You need to register to use it and your details will be saved for future visits.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Lyon Saint Exupery Airport is about 15 miles from the centre of Lyon. It's connected to the city by the tram-train Rhonexpress. It takes about half an hour to reach the city using this service. You can hop off at the city's main Lyon Part-Dieu train station or get off earlier at Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie and connect onto the metro. Taxis are also available but can be quite expensive. Car hire at Lyon Airport is another option, and it's always a good idea to pre-book to avoid disappointment.
Practical Information
You need a valid passport to fly to France from the UK. Try to arrive no later than 90 minutes before your flight is due to depart. Remember that airport security can get crowded during evenings, weekends and school holidays and give yourself plenty of extra time if you're trying to reach the airport during rush hour.
What to expect in Lyon
Lyon is an hour ahead of Birmingham. The local currency is the Euro (€). Lyon is widely considered to be France's foodie capital. While dinner for two is cheaper than it is in Birmingham (by about 18%), beer is slightly more expensive. Taxis are much cheaper, so it all balances out in the end. Lyon gets better weather than Birmingham during the summer, with an average temperature of 22°C in July. Winters are similar, however, with an average of 3°C during January.
