From size and weight limits to excess fees, this is our comprehensive guide to Norwegian Airline's baggage allowances
What is Norwegian Air's hand baggage allowance?
Similar to other European-centric airlines such as SAS and British Airways, Norwegian allow one personal item - such as a handbag, backpack or laptop bag - and one cabin bag on every fare except their cheapest, LowFare (only personal items are included).
If you're flying in any other class - including LowFare+ and Flex - you get to bring both bags. Score.
We don't blame you if you're eyeing up the money-saving option though, and what's handy is that you can still bring a cabin bag with you, you'll just need to purchase it for £12.12 (€13.90) if it's a domestic flight and between £13.86 (€15.90) and £26 (€29.90) if it's international.
It's worth noting that Norwegian works a bit differently to other airlines, particularly when it comes to hand baggage. Here's what to look out for:
Weight limits for carry-on bags are subject to a combined weight, so don't forget to include the weight of your personal item in your calculations
Good news! Duty free shopping does not count towards your hand luggage (unlike with airlines such as British Airways and Etihad) so feel free to spree (up to one bag's worth) before take-off!
Your standard 'bag' doesn't actually need to be a bag, you can bring an item instead (like a wedding dress, camera or your precious gem collection). Just make sure it's within Norwegian's hand baggage size and weight limits and doesn't feature on their restricted items/dangerous goods list.
Here's an overview of Norwegian Air hand baggage allowance.
Norwegian Air's cabin bag size | Norwegian Air's cabin bag weight | Number of bags allowed on board | Cost to check in oversized hand luggage |
|---|---|---|---|
Underseat bag: Cabin bag: | LowFare and LowFare+: combined weight of 10kg Flex: combined weight of 15kg | One underseat bag and one cabin bag, regardless of the fare | Cabin baggage exceeding the size or weight restrictions will be checked into the hold and incur a fee. If you've already met your checked luggage limit, you'll be charged an excess baggage fee of £13 (€15) per kg per flight. |
What is Norwegian Airlines' checked baggage allowance?
Like to travel with everything but the kitchen sink? Luckily there are plenty of checked baggage options when it comes to flying with Norwegian, you just need to know your ticket type.
Take a look at the table below for an overview of how many bags you can bring with you in each fare class.
Not flying with Norwegian? Here's a breakdown of other airlines' checked baggage policies.
Norwegian Air's hold baggage max size | Norwegian Air's hold luggage weight allowance | Number of hold bags included | Cost of Norwegian Air's hold luggage before check-in | Cost of Norwegian Air's hold luggage at check-in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
250x79x112cm Max total: 300cm | LowFare: LowFare+ and Flex: 23kg Bags must not collectively weigh more than 74kg | LowFare: LowFare+: Flex: 2 bags | First checked bag Domestic: Second checked bag Domestic: £26 (€29.90) Connecting flights: Calculated by total baggage fees per flight | Charged per item, per flight. If you want to bring more bags than you're allocated, you can, just be prepared to pay for them. Additional bags are easy to buy, but their cost varies depending on your route and at what point you buy the bags - before or during check-in.
As with most airlines, it's cheaper to pay for your baggage online, ahead of your flight, rather than at the airport.
Sporty traveller? Special equipment such as skis and golf clubs can't be checked in as regular luggage, but need to be added separately to your booking. They will cost you, with fees tending to be around the £34.90-£44 (€40-50) mark (though we suggest double checking with the airline before booking).
You can save up to 50% on extra baggage fees by paying online before you fly.

What are Norwegian's excess baggage fees?
If you arrive at the airport with more bags than you're allowed - or with bags larger or heavier than what's outlined above - you'll be charged at the check-in desk.
If your hand luggage is too big, you'll need to pay to check it in as hold luggage, though if you've already met your allocation, you'll be charged excess fees. This applies to larger luggage too: if you're checking in more than 2 checked bags and 1 small bag limit, your wallet will feel it.
Prices depend on your fare and route, but in general, any bag over 23kg will be charged at £13 (€15) per kg, per flight, to take with you. Check with the airline for specifics.
Obviously we'd all rather avoid spending extra pennies at the airport, so to stop that happening, keep in the mind the following:
Each bag you bring on a Norwegian flight must not be heavier than 32kg or lighter than 2kg
The combined weight of all your checked bags mustn't be over 74kg
No one bag can be bigger than 250x79x112cm, or have a maximum circumference of 300cm
