SAS baggage allowance guide

Baggage weight, size and excess fee information for Scandinavian Airlines

From size and weight restriction to excess baggage fees, here's what you need to know about flying with SAS.

What is SAS hand baggage allowance?

SAS Airlines' baggage allowance is quite generous when it comes to hand baggage.

For flights outside of Europe, every ticket includes both an underseat bag (such as a handbag or backpack) as well as a cabin bag. If you're in Premium or Business Class, your ticket includes two cabin bags, as well as your underseat item. Bonus!

If you're flying within Europe you still get an underseat bag and a cabin bag, unless you've booked an Economy Light ticket (in which case it's just an underseat bag).

It's also worth noting that for European flights, SAS only allow one cabin bag per passenger, so even if you're in Premium or Business Class seats, you can't pay to bring more.

Here's an overview:

SAS cabin bag size

SAS cabin bag weight

Number of bags allowed on board

Cost to check in oversized hand luggage

Underseat bag: 40x30x15cm

Cabin bag: 55x40x23cm

Underseat bag: no larger that 18L capacity

Cabin bag: 8kg

Within Europe:
1 bag per passenger, regardless of the fare class

Outside of Europe:
Economy: 1 bag

Premium and Business: 2 bags

Cabin baggage exceeding the size or weight restrictions will need to be checked into the hold and paid for as an additional checked bag

How much does SAS hand baggage cost?

If you're flying within Europe on an Economy Light fare and wish to bring a cabin bag, you can bring one, you'll just need to pay for it. How much it costs depends not only on your ticket type and destination, but how far ahead of departure you book the bag. Unsurprisingly, it gets more expensive the closer you get to take-off, so it's a good idea to get it sorted as soon as possible.

What is SAS' checked baggage allowance?

Thankfully, SAS checked baggage policy is a bit simpler. Where you're travelling has nothing to do with it, it's all about your ticket type.

You'll get at least one bag of checked luggage included in every fare except Economy Light, though the amount of bags and weight you're able to bring depends on your class.

Should you wish to bring additional checked baggage (over what's included in your ticket), you'll be charged a fixed fee per bag, per flight.

These fees vary quite significantly and depend on:

  • Where you're flying

  • Your ticket class

  • How long you leave it before booking

  • How many extra bags you're buying

If it exceeds it, it's considered special luggage and you'll need to pay a fee. Note that this includes strollers, sports equipment, musical instruments, wheelchairs and any other oversized items. You can add special baggage such as golf clubs or skis to your booking online up to 24 hours before departure. If adding it later, you'll need to contact SAS Customer Service.
