Plan your holiday to Cologne
Budget
A bit of planning goes a long way in Cologne. The city's walkable centre helps cut down on transport costs, and you can usually find a meal at an inexpensive restaurant for around 13 euros (€), washed down with a domestic beer for under €5. If you need a taxi, trips start at around €10.
Getting around Cologne
Subway and street trams share the same 12 lines. Services run until 1am on weekdays and through the night at weekends. Ticket machines are available at stations and on each train car and accept euro coins and credit cards but not notes. Cologne is a pleasantly walkable city – most attractions are within easy reach of the nearest train station.
Day trips from Cologne
About half an hour south by train, Bonn is the former German capital and birthplace of Beethoven. Time your visit around the autumn Beethoven Festival and stop by the composer's childhood home. Or head out by car to Schloss Drachenburg, a striking 19th-century castle with panoramic views of the Rhine.
