Hotels in Cologne

Cologne is known for being one of Germany’s most liberal cities. With a fun-loving attitude, burgeoning arts scene, and a distinct ‘Kölsch’ identity, Cologne has an unmistakable vibe that it’s hard not to fall in love with. Culture vultures will love Cologne for its abundance of art galleries, museums, and theatres, while party animals will be satisfied with the excellent bars and hedonistic Karneval.

There are plenty of Cologne hotels to choose from, whether you’re looking for a basic chain hotel, a budget hostel, or luxurious boutique accommodation. When you’re booking a hotel in Cologne it’s worth considering what’s nearby and how far you’d be willing to walk to reach whatever you’re looking for: whether that’s museums or bars.

Our guide to Cologne’s central neighbourhoods should help you to pick the right hotel, in the right location.

Cologne’s old town is one of the most beautiful parts of the city. Packed with hotels, restaurants, and bars, it’s a great spot to spend a night out. The colourful buildings of Alter Markt square play host to plenty of historic beer halls serving up the local brew, Kölsch: named for the city’s dialect. The Aldstadt is also good for sightseeing, as the neighbourhood is home to the famous Koln Dam, the impressive city cathedral, which is widely considered to be the greatest in Germany.

Modern and vibrant, Neustadt is a neighbourhood that both works and plays hard. It’s where you’ll find the headquarters of Germany’s top media companies, and during the day you’re likely to see plenty of bigwigs in suits. Many of the city’s luxury hotel chains are based here, with plenty of big brands having an outpost in this trendy neighbourhood. At night, Cologne’s liveliest residents party in the Belgian Quarter, renowned for its trendy bars and epic dance clubs.

Get a taste for local life in this quiet southern neighbourhood, characterised by its wide boulevards and pavement cafes. Life moves at a slower pace here, with people relaxing in local coffee shops and cocktail bars before heading out to the theatre (there are two in the neighbourhood). The Saint Severin church is well worth a visit, as is the excellent chocolate museum. Hotels in Südstadt are a popular choice for those who prefer a low-key nightlife, and who don’t mind doing a bit of walking to get to the sights of the old town.
