Terminal Information – Departing

This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.

Virgin Atlantic fly from terminal 3. Detroit is outside the European Union so you can enjoy a duty free discount when you shop in the departure lounge. Shops in T3 are quite luxurious and include Burberry, Paul Smith and Cath Kidston. Executive lounges are provided by Servisair and No.1 Traveller.

Delta Air Lines depart from terminal 4. This terminal has its own stop on the underground (Piccadilly Line). Although the Heathrow Express doesn't call at T4, it's possible to hop off at the station for terminals 1,2&3 and then take the tube an additional stop. Give yourself a bit of extra time to account for this. Like T3, T4 also has a wide selection of high-end shops and restaurants in the departure lounge. T4 has one executive lounge, operated by Plaza Premium.

Terminal Information – Arriving

Only one public bus serves Detroit Airport: the 125. This is mostly used by locals and workers rather than tourists, so don't expect free Wi-Fi or somewhere to stow your luggage. The bus fare is $2* (about £1.40) and the journey time is roughly 75 minutes. A better option is to take a taxi: expect to pay $45-50* (£31-35) in a metered cab. Car hire is also available, and having your own vehicle is one of the best ways to see the city and its surrounds.

Practical Information

We recommend arriving at the airport two hours or more before departure. British citizens need a valid passport to fly to Detroit from London. Most people can enter the United States visa free for up to 90 days, thanks to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Some people are not eligible: for example certain dual nationals, those who have visited politically unstable countries recently, those planning to work in America, and anyone with a criminal record. You also won't be eligible if you don't have a chipped passport. If in doubt, speak to your nearest embassy. If you are eligible under the VWP you will need to fill out an ESTA form online 72 hours before travel.

What to expect in Detroit

Detroit is five hours behind London and the currency is the US dollar ($). Detroit has a reputation as one of the most dangerous cities in the USA. This is a pity: as long as you follow common sense it's easy to stay safe. When driving you should stick to major roads and avoid venturing into residential neighbourhoods that you're not familiar with. Downtown and midtown are very safe and thankfully this is where most of the major attractions are.
