British Airways and Royal Jordanian both fly to Amman from London-Heathrow. Currently these are the only direct flights available from London.

Terminal Information – Departing

This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.

Royal Jordanian fly from terminal 3. There are plenty of shops to make the most of your duty free allowance in. Choose from British fashion labels like Burberry and Cath Kidston or just stock up on last minute travel essentials at Boots. There are two lounges in terminal 3: one operated by Servisair and another by No.1 Traveller. Both are accessible to all passengers for a fee. You can book in advance or pay on the day.

British Airways fly from terminal 5. This terminal is an extra stop on the Piccadilly Line and Heathrow Express. Terminal 5 is renowned for its luxurious shops and restaurants, including Gordon Ramsay's Plane Food restaurant and an outpost of Harrods. There's an Aspire Lounge & Spa in terminal 5. You can pay for lounge access on the day.

Terminal Information – Arriving

You can reach downtown Amman by taxi, express bus, or hire car. Taxis from the airport to the city are fixed rate at JOD 20* (just under £20). The Airport Express bus runs every half hour from 6am to 6pm, and once an hour from 6pm to midnight. Tickets are JOD 3.25 (just over £3.20). You need to buy them from the official booth. It takes just under an hour to reach Tabarbour bus station in the city. If you'd rather drive yourself, remember to compare car hire at Amman Airport with Skyscanner.

Practical Information

We recommend arriving at Heathrow Airport around two hours before your flight. You need a valid passport to fly to Amman, and it needs to be valid for six months after your entry into Jordan. British citizens need a visa to visit Jordan, but you can one on arrival at the airport. Note that this costs JOD 40* (just under £40) and you need to pay for it in the local currency. There's a currency exchange before customs, but we recommend bringing the appropriate money with you just in case. This will be valid for one month, but can be extended for six months once you arrive.

What to expect in Amman

Amman is two hours ahead of London. The currency is the Jordanian dinar. Prices in Amman are a lot lower than in London. A three-course meal for two in a regular restaurant costs less than £30*. Taxis are a lot cheaper too, with a starting fare of 25p* and then 45p* for each additional kilometre. Amman is much hotter than London during the summer, when the average temperature is 25°C (although it often soars above this). During winter the temperature is around 8°C, which is similar to London.
