Terminal Information – Departing
East Midlands Airport has one terminal. Enjoy one hour of free Wi-Fi, browse the shops or grab a bite to eat in the food court. The food court has something for every appetite, whether you want a quick coffee (Flat White), a fast burger (Burger King) or a more relaxed lunch (Frankie & Benny's). The Castle Rock Tap Room and Kitchen is perfect for some pre-flight pub-grub while Pork & Pickle specialise in local grub. For grab 'n' go sandwiches there's a Grab and Fly. If you're peckish before going through security you can enjoy a fast bite in Leon. All of the usual airport shops have an outpost at the airport, from World Duty Free and Dixons Travel to Boots and WHSmith. There's also a Superdrug. For a bit of extra luxury you can check into the Escape Lounge for £19.99* per person. The lounge offers a peaceful place to relax with unlimited Wi-Fi and a selection of complimentary refreshments.
Terminal Information – Arriving
It doesn't matter which terminal your flight arrives at as all passengers are filtered into Schiphol Plaza. From here it's easy to find public (and private) transport into the city centre. Taxi ranks and bus stops are located just outside the terminal: you can expect to pay €40-50* (about £28-36) for the trip into downtown Amsterdam. Cabs are metered so it depends how far you're going. All major car companies have desks inside the arrivals hall. Remember to compare car hire at Schiphol Airport before you fly. The quickest and easiest way to reach the city centre is by train. A one-way ticket to Centraal ticket costs €3.90* (about £2.75) and you can easily buy them from the ticket machines in the station. If your hotel is near Museumplein or Leidseplein it might be quicker to take the airport bus. One-way tickets are €5* (about £3.50).
Practical Information
You need a valid passport to fly from the East Midlands to Amsterdam. We recommend arriving at the airport two hours before your flight is scheduled to depart.
What to expect in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is one hour ahead of the East Midlands and the currency is the Euro (€). The local language is Dutch, although due to international tourism the majority of people can speak English. Although Amsterdam is famous for its relaxed attitude towards soft drugs, they're still illegal. If a policeman catches you in possession of the drug, anywhere but inside a 'coffee shop', you could face a fine or arrest.
