Airlines that fly from Bangkok to London
Direct flights to London are available from Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). British Airways, EVA Air and Thai Airways all fly from here to London-Heathrow. Indirect flights from Bangkok are also available.
Terminal Information – Departing
Despite its massive size, Suvarnabhumi Airport only has one terminal. If you take a taxi to the airport, confirm with your driver that you're going to Suvarnabhumi (pronounced 'soo-wanna-poom'). Bangkok's second airport, Don Mueang, is on the other side of the city so going there accidentally could be disastrous.
Flights to London leave from the international departures hall. Check-in takes place on level 4 of the airport. The VAT Refund for Tourists office is on this floor, before passport control. Once you get through security you'll find a wide range of places to eat, offering Thai and Western favourites, as well as the usual duty free and souvenir shops. There's a massage parlour too, if you want to enjoy being bent out of shape one last time.
Terminal Information – Arriving
This is a guideline. Always check airport websites for up to date terminal information.
Thai Airways and EVA Air both land at terminal 2 while British Airways land at terminal 5. Both terminals have train and underground stations. The fastest way to reach central London is with the Heathrow Express train, while the cheapest method is to hop on the Piccadilly Line of the tube. You can download tube map apps to make navigating London easier. Contactless cards can be used in place of an Oyster card, so you don't need to join the ticket queues on arrival. Buses, taxis and car hire are also available from Heathrow Airport.
Practical Information
You need a valid passport to fly to London from Bangkok. Try to arrive at the airport at least two and a half hours before your flight's scheduled departure time.
What to expect in London
London is seven hours behind Bangkok (or six hours behind during British Summer Time). London's climate is a lot cooler than Bangkok. Even if you're travelling during the summer, you might need a jumper if you've been in Southeast Asia for a while. During July (the hottest month) you can expect an average temperature of 19°C, and that drops to 7°C in January: the city's coldest month. As well as being colder, London is a lot more expensive than Bangkok: dinner for two costs £50* on average, a pint of beer costs £4* and a 5km taxi journey will set you back around £18*.
