Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is where you'll catch your flight from Hong Kong to Taipei. Most of the flights bound for Taipei depart from Terminal 1. The airport has two terminals that are connected by a central access way. Both terminals are large and modern. While you wait to board, you can browse the stores like Kiehl's or Chanel, or pick up something to eat at a nice restaurant, such as Misocool or Chinese Kitchen.

Arriving at Hong Kong International Airport two hours before your scheduled departure is advised. Frequent travellers can sign up for expedited service, which can speed up the customs and immigration process.

All of these cheap flights from Hong Kong to Taipei land at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). Taipei does have another airport: Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA), but there are no direct flights from Hong Kong to Taipei that fly to TSA. You could fly from Hong Kong to TSA by making a stop in Shanghai or Xiamen. Xiamen Air, Shanghai Airlines and China Eastern fly this route. However, keep in mind that with a layover, flying to TSA takes significantly longer than flying to TPE.

TPE has two passenger terminals, which are connected to by people movers. It's common for locals to take the bus or train from TPE to the city. If you'd like to do so, visit the bus or rail stations at the airport. The Taoyuan Airport MRT may be one of the best methods of transportation for visitors. It has an express train that stops in both terminals and takes people to Downtown Taipei.

TSA is also connected to the metro system. You can take the Neihu Line from the airport station. Buses regularly travel to TSA as well. At either airport in Taipei, taxis are readily available and will be waiting outside the terminals.

When Arriving in Taipei

Taipei uses the Taiwanese dollar as currency. While you can use credit or debit cards in many larger businesses, it's always a good idea to have some cash. Only cash is accepted at street markets, small restaurants and certain stores. You can exchange your money at a currency centre in the airport. There are also exchange centres at large department stores, hotels and banks. Taipei is generally a less expensive city than Hong Kong with food prices costing about 40 percent less.
