Airlines that fly from Beijing to Tokyo

Air China, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways fly to Tokyo-Haneda and Tokyo-Narita from Beijing-Capital International Airport. Other airlines that fly to Tokyo are China Eastern Airlines and Mega Maldives to Tokyo-Narita, and Hainan Airlines to Tokyo-Haneda.

No airlines currently offer flights to Tokyo from Beijing-Nanyuan Airport.

Terminal Information – Departing

This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.

Air China, Japan Airlines and All Nippon flights depart from terminal 3E. The terminal has a huge selection of places to eat or grab a drink, including Chinese and Western fast food chains as well as bakeries, bars and cafes. There's a wide range of fashion shops in this terminal, as well as stores selling little luxuries like tech, wine and tea.

China Eastern Airlines, Mega Maldives and Hainan Airlines fly from terminal 2. This terminal has a smaller range of places to eat and shop, but still offers a good selection of Chinese and global favourites. Both terminals at this airport offer free Wi-Fi.

Terminal Information – Arriving

Tokyo is a sprawling city, so we highly recommend researching transport options before you fly so that you know exactly how to get to your hotel.

At Tokyo-Haneda: flights from Beijing land at the international terminal. You can reach the city centre via the Tokyo Monorail or the Keikyu train line. Taxis are available from outside the airport: expect to pay between ¥4,000* to ¥10,000* (roughly £25-60).

At Tokyo-Narita: shuttle buses run between the airport and Tokyo's most popular hotels. The journey can take up to two hours, so if you're in a hurry we recommend taking either the Skyliner electric train or the Narita Express. Cheap commuter trains also call at the airport. Another option is to take a taxi, but this can be prohibitively expensive: expect to at least ¥30,000* (over £185).

Practical Information

You need a valid passport to fly from Beijing to Japan. British citizens can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. You might be asked to show evidence of onward or return travel, so book your flights from Japan before you go. If you're travelling for a reason other than tourism you will need to organise your visa in advance, as they aren't available upon arrival. Some prescription drugs are tightly controlled, and people have been deported for bringing them into the country. If you take prescription drugs we highly recommend speaking to the Japanese embassy for advice.

What to expect in Tokyo

Tokyo is one hour ahead of Beijing and the local currency is the Japanese yen (‎¥). Tokyo has milder winters than Beijing, although summer temperatures are very similar. The best time to visit is from September to November, after the summer high season ends. Prices in Tokyo are generally higher than in Beijing. Expect to pay around £34* for dinner for two, £2.40* for a pint of local beer, and £1.25* for a short journey on public transport.
