There’s a good choice of airlines providing flights from Birmingham to Madrid. Ryanair, Iberia Express, Iberia and Norwegian Air all offer direct flights.  

Terminal Information

Birmingham Airport

There’s just one terminal at Birmingham Airport so it’s easy to find your way around. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport 90 minutes before their scheduled flight departure time. This leaves plenty of time to pass through security and travel to your gate. If you are travelling with Ryanair you will need to check-in in advance but all other airlines offer both online check in and check in at the airport.

If you want to speed up your journey through security, you can purchase a priority pass for £3.00. These are available online in advance or from machines outside the security area. While you may still need to queue for a short time, you’ll be through to the departures lounge much more quickly.

In the departures lounge, there is a currency exchange, a duty free store and lots of high street shops including WHSmith, Boots, Dixons, Hugo Boss, Pandora and Victoria’s Secret. If you’re looking for something to eat, you can grab a quick bite from eateries like Burger King or Pret A Manger, or sit down for something more substantial at Frankie & Bennie’s or Giraffe.

Madrid Airport

Madrid Airport is located 13km northeast of the city’s central Puerto del Sol square. The airport is also known as Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. There are three terminals at the airport, Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 4. Ryanair and Norwegian Air arrive to Terminal 1. Iberia Express and Iberia arrive to Terminal 4.

The arrivals hall for both terminals is located on the ground floor of the terminal building. Both terminals offer a currency exchange, cash machines and a selection of food and drink outlets. Car hire desks for Sixt, Enterprise, Europcar, Avis and Hertz are located in the arrivals lobby (opposite lounge 2) in Terminal 1 and on the basement P-1 floor in Terminal 4. There’s also a taxi rank outside both terminals. A taxi journey into the city centre costs a standard fare of €30.00.

A variety of public transport options are available from both terminals. The metro line 8 stops at all airport terminals and takes around 15 minutes to travel to Nuevos Ministerios in the city centre. From Terminal 4, you can also choose to take the train to the city centre. It’s a slightly quicker but slightly more expensive journey than the metro. Local buses and intercity buses also depart from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 4.

What to Expect in Madrid

Madrid enjoys warm Mediterranean climate. Temperatures are hot during summer months and mild during the winter. Whilst May and June experience pleasant highs in the 20s, July and August are very hot, with temperatures sometimes reaching up to 40 degrees. At this time, many locals head out of the city to escape the heat or make use of local swimming pools to cool down. Rainfall for the year peaks in October and November but generally, the city is dry, particularly in comparison to Birmingham. 

Prices in Madrid are much cheaper than in Birmingham. You can expect to pay €40.00 for a mid-range three course meal for two, €3.00 for a bottle of beer and €1.70 for a cappuccino. Supermarket shopping and public transport travel are also much cheaper than in Birmingham and you can get around for as little as €1.50 for a one way journey.
