United and Lufthansa are the only airlines offering direct flights from Belfast to New York. Flights depart from Belfast International Airport and arrive at New York’s Newark Liberty International Airport. Flights for both airlines fly into Terminal B.

Check-in desks for transatlantic flights open three hours before the flight’s scheduled departure time. Both United and Lufthansa offer online and mobile check in in advance which will save you time at the airport. Bag drop desks are available for those who have hold luggage to check in.

Passengers who want to speed up their journey through security can purchase a Priority Security Pass for £3 and bypass the worst of the queues. Passes are available from self-service kiosks outside the security area.

Once you’re through to the departures lounge, you’ll find a range of facilities. Food and drink outlets include Burger King, Starbucks and the Fed and Watered restaurant, which serves more substantial meals and snacks. There are also a number of shops, including Superdrug, WHSmith and a duty free store, where you can pick up last minute essentials. Passengers will also find an ICE Currency Exchange desk and there’s free Wi-Fi for up to two hours throughout the departures area.

The Business Lounge provides an alternative to the busy departures lounge. It is open to passengers travelling on any airline for a fee and offers complimentary snacks and drinks as well as a quiet and relaxing space.

Newark Liberty International Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport is located approximately 24 kilometres south-west of New York City, in Newark, New Jersey. Flights from Belfast arrive to Terminal B.

Once passengers have passed through customs and baggage reclaim, they’ll find a range of facilities in the arrivals hall. There’s a Welcome Center where you can get information about onward travel and local attractions, free Wi-Fi is available for up to 30 minutes and there are charging stations available for phones and laptops. Practical Information

The US has a Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) in place and this applies to British citizens. As a result, passengers with a British passport do not need a visa for tourist visits of up to 90 days. You will need to get authorisation to travel before your flight through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) website. You will need to know your flight details and the address of the place you are staying on your first night in the US.
