I grew up here so I'll be the first to say that it's gone really down hill in the past 10 years. It's become fairly ghetto and dangerous as more and more people have moved here. We do have everything here as far as shops, parks, and theaters go, but I can't recommend visiting here as it is sadly unsafe.
You know you've left SoCal and entered the desert when you get to Victorville. It's stunning but bleak and continues in the same vein until you get to Las Vegas. Good place to start a long drive.
