Hotels in San Francisco

Known for its liberal attitude, vibrant arts scene, and proximity to the Northern Californian wine lands, it’s no surprise that San Francisco is one of the world’s most visited cities. There are lots of iconic things to see: from the Golden Gate Bridge and Silicon Valley to the colourful neighbourhoods of LGBTQ friendly Castro and bohemian Haight.

Due to its popularity as a tourist destination, there are plenty of hotels in San Francisco to choose from. Most of the hotels in San Francisco are concentrated around Downtown, Chinatown, and Fisherman’s Wharf: which is handy, as this is where most of the main attractions are. There’s something to suit every budget: whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Nob Hill, family friendly accommodation on Fisherman’s Wharf, or a cheap hostel in Chinatown.

San Francisco city is compact and easy to walk around: as long as you don’t mind hills. Like Rome, Lisbon, and Athens, San Francisco is built on seven hills; Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill, Rincon Hill, Twin Peaks, Mount Sutro, and Mount Davidson. A more recent count has put the city’s number of named hills closer to 43, so it might be worth upping the elevation on the treadmill for a few weeks before jumping on your flight.

Whichever neighbourhood you choose to stay in, you should be able to get around and see all of the main sights on foot. Don’t worry if you forget to pack your walking shoes (or just can’t face walking up another hill). San Francisco has a comprehensive public transport system, including the iconic yellow cable cars. Of course, if you want to get out and explore the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, it’s worth hiring a car.

Four seasons in one day might be common in Britain, but San Francisco takes it to new extremes thanks to its micro-climates. While one neighbourhood suffers from the famous summer fog, another could be experiencing blazing hot sunshine. When you fly to San Francisco it’s worth packing your sunscreen as well as your waterproofs and wooly gloves.
