Airports in Tehran

Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) is one of Iran’s major international airports, and is located 19 miles south of Tehran. Construction of the airport began in 1979, but the airport didn’t open until 2004 when it over the majority of international flights from Tehran’s other airport, Mehrabad International (THR). Despite the grand opening, Mehrabad Airport remains the busiest airport in Iran.

Airlines that fly to Tehran

Currently Iran Air is the only airline operating direct flights to Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport from the UK. At the moment there are no direct flights from Europe to Mehrabad Airport.

Getting into Tehran

You can catch a bus from Imam Khomeini Airport to Azadi Square, via the Haram-e-Motahhar Metro Station where you can transfer onto the red line tube to the city centre. Bus tickets cost 20 thousand Rials* (about 45p). You can also catch a taxi from outside the airport terminal: this should cost between 250 thousand and 300 thousand Rials* (roughly between £5.80 and £6.90). Car rental is also available at the airport if you want to explore Iran on four wheels.
