Terminal Information
Aberdeen Airport
Aberdeen Airport has just one terminal. It’s recommended that passengers on flights to the UK or Ireland arrive at least one and a half hours before their scheduled departure time. Flybe offers online check in, automatic email or mobile check in and staffed or self-service check in desks at Aberdeen Airport.
The departure lounge at Aberdeen Airport has all of the shops and facilities you need to stock up on food, drink and supplies before your flight. Shops include Boots, WHSmith, Dixons, Art at the Airport and Duty Free. For food and drink, passengers can choose from Costa Coffee, The Kitchen, The Granite City, and The Globe. There’s also an internet kiosk available and a Travelex currency exchange.
Aberdeen Airport has a number of premium lounges. The Eastern Airways Lounge is open to Eastern Airways passengers and the British Airways Terraces Lounge is open to British Airways Executive Club members. However, for a few, passengers on any airline can access the Servisair Executive Lounge. There you’ll find complimentary drinks, snacks, newspapers and magazines and a quiet place to relax before your flight.
Birmingham Airport
Passengers arriving to Birmingham Airport will find a range of facilities. In the ground floor arrivals hall there is a Marks & Spencer Simply Food, a Costa Coffee and a WH Smith, great for getting some refreshments before your onward journey. There are also a number of car hire companies operating in the arrivals hall. These include Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, National, Sixt and Budget. The car hire offices are generally open from 6am to midnight.
When making your way from the airport to your final destination, there are lots of options besides hiring a car. Licensed black cabs are available outside the terminal building 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Alternatively, Birmingham International Rail Station can be accessed via the free Air-Rail Link monorail service, which you’ll find on the first floor of the terminal building. In just two minutes, passengers are transported to the rail station which has regular connections to central Birmingham and the rest of the country.
There are also a number of local bus routes which stop directly outside the airport terminal. Passengers can find timetables on Birmingham Airport’s website and pay their fare when they get on the bus. The 97/97A runs 24 hours a day and provides a service between the airport and Birmingham city centre.
Practical Information
Passengers flying within the UK do not need to carry their passport. However, in lieu of a passport, you’ll need some form of photographic ID. The kinds of ID accepted differ from airline to airline so it’s best to check before you travel.
What to Expect in Birmingham
In Birmingham, eating out, shopping and public transport travel are all considerably less expensive than in Aberdeen. You’re likely to find a mid-range three course meal for around £45.
It may well be a few degrees warmer down in the Midlands but you’ll also run a higher risk of getting caught in the rain.
