Eurowings offer seasonal flights from Edinburgh to Dusseldorf-International Airport, while Ryanair offer year-round flights to Dusseldorf-Weeze Airport.

Terminal Information – Departing

Edinburgh Airport is Scotland's busiest airport. Check-in is on the ground-floor level, with security and the departure lounge upstairs. There are plenty of places to shop and eat in the departure lounge, but look out for long queues at the coffee shops if you're boarding the red-eye. Shops in the departure lounge include Thinking Scotland, WH Smith, Accessorize and a huge Superdrug. There's an Aerospa where you can indulge in 15 minute treatments and an art gallery showcasing work by local artists. Free Wi-Fi (courtesy of Skyscanner) is available throughout the departure hall. Edinburgh Airport has two lounges that passengers on all airlines can use, regardless of ticket class. They're run by Aspire and No.1 Traveller. Lounges offer a comfortable place to relax away from the general hubbub, along with a selection of complimentary refreshments. You can pay to access the lounge on the day, or book in advance via Edinburgh Airport's website.

Terminal Information – Arriving

At Dusseldorf International Airport: The easiest way to reach the city is by S-bahn (suburban rail) lines S7 or S11. This takes 12 minutes, while road transportation (taxi, bus or hire car) takes 20. Bus and S-bahn tickets cost the same (€2.50*) while a taxi will set you back around €20*. Avis, Buchbinder, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty and Sixt all provide car hire at Dusseldorf International Airport.

At Dusseldorf Weeze Airport: Mostly used by low-cost airlines, this small airport is about 50 miles from downtown Dusseldorf. It takes about an hour and a half to reach Dusseldorf by bus, and tickets cost €14*. A taxi to the city would be very expensive, so car hire at Weeze Airport is a good option if you'd prefer to avoid taking public transport.

Practical Information

You need a valid passport to fly to Dusseldorf from Edinburgh. For European short-haul flights it's good to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before scheduled departure.

What to expect in Dusseldorf

Dusseldorf is an hour ahead of Edinburgh and the currency is the Euro (€). The climate in Dusseldorf is fairly similar to Edinburgh. Summers are slightly warmer and winters are a bit colder. The average temperature during July is 18°C (3°C warmer than Edinburgh's average of 15°C), while the temperature in January is a chilly 2°C (1°C cooler than Edinburgh's 3°C). Dusseldorf is quite an expensive city by German standards, and most things are slightly more expensive than they would be in Edinburgh. You'll be glad to hear that one exception is alcohol: a pint of the local Altbier will set you back about £3.45* on average, while a pint of local beer in Edinburgh is more likely to cost £3.70*.
