Terminal Information
Belfast City Airport
Belfast City Airport is also known as George Best Belfast City Airport and has just one terminal building. Check-in desks are located on the left hand side as you enter the terminal. The airport advises passengers to arrive at the airport 90 minutes before their flight to Cardiff is scheduled to depart. Flybe offers online and automatic mobile check in, so if you are travelling with hand luggage only you can go straight to security after arriving at the airport.
Free Wi-Fi is available for an unlimited time throughout the terminal. In the departures lounge, passengers will find a range of facilities. There’s a Bushmills pub which serves malt whiskeys, wines and beers along with selection of Irish cuisine. Harvest Market boasts a pizza oven and salad bar and a quick bite to eat can be found at either Costa Coffee or O’Briens sandwich shop.
If you need to pick up a few essentials before your flight, you’ll find Boots, WHSmith, a House of Ireland store and World Duty Free in the departures lounge.
The airport is also home to the Aspire Lounge, a premium option available by paying on the day or booking in advance online. The lounge is located close to the departure gates but offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the main departures lounge. It offers complimentary snacks, soft and alcoholic drinks and a selection of newspapers and magazines.
Cardiff Airport
Cardiff Airport is located 12 miles west of Cardiff city centre. The airport has just one terminal building and a small arrivals hall. In the arrivals hall, passengers will find a tourist information desk providing information on local attractions and onward travel facilities.
There are a number of options for getting from Cardiff Airport to your final destination. Car hire companies, including Enterprise, Europcar and Hertz, all have desks at the airport. If you choose to hire a car, you’ll find that roads around the airport are well signposted and there’s easy access to the M4 motorway.
The closest rail station to the airport is located in Rhoose. The station offers regular connections to Cardiff Central and Bridgend, departing every hour Mondays to Saturdays and every two hours on Sundays. Passengers can take a shuttle bus, costing just £1*, to make the 10 minute journey from the airport to the train station.
Alternatively, passengers can take the T9 Cardiff Airport Express Bus Service direct to the city centre. The comfortable buses offer Wi-Fi and a ticket costs £5*. Buses leave every 20 minutes and take around 40 minutes to reach the city centre. Taxis are also available from outside the terminal building.
Practical Information
If you’re a British national travelling within the UK, you don’t need to carry your passport. However, in lieu of your passport, you will need to carry some other form of photographic identification such as a driving licence.
What to Expect in Cardiff
Cardiff is usually a couple of degrees warmer than Belfast throughout the year. Temperatures reach the low twenties during the summer months and don’t often fall to freezing in the winter. Both cities are pretty rainy but you’re more likely to get dry weather in Cardiff than in Belfast.
Prices in Cardiff are generally a little more expensive than in Belfast. A mid-range three course meal for two will set you back around £40.00* and a cheaper meal around £10.00*. Public transport, however, is a little cheaper with a one-way journey costing around £1.80*.
