Visit Sumburgh in the Shetland Isles to discover rugged rural scenery and archaeologically significant locations like the Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement. You can also journey to the southern tip of the island and visit the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse, which is surrounded by beaches and cliffs.
Sumburgh has only one hotel, the boutique Sumburgh Hotel. There are, however, several excellent properties on the other Shetland Isles and Lerwick within just a few miles of Sumburgh itself.
1. Spiggie Hotel
Spiggie Hotel is located on Scousburgh, just five miles from Sumburgh. It's set in a small country house that offers a family guest house feel, making it a low-cost alternative to cheap hotels in Sumburgh.
2. Lerwick Hotel
Lerwick Hotel offers a more familiar, traditional, mid-range hotel experience, and it's only a half hour due north of Sumburgh on the main road, A970. It's an elevated building overlooking the bay that's a short walk from Lerwick town center. It has its own restaurant, family rooms, and an old-world lounge and bar.
3. Sumburgh Hotel
Sumburgh Hotel is a quaint boutique hotel in Sumburgh set in a nineteenth century stone manor and its annex. It offers country and sea views, traditional Scottish meals, and bike rentals.
While the Sumburgh Hotel is the closest hotel to Lerwick Sumburgh Airport (LSI), making it a prime choice for last-minute hotels in Sumburgh, there are certainly other hotels reasonably close to the airport as well.
1. Da Roost
Da Roost while not a hotel proper, is a great option given the lack of cheap hotels in Sumburgh. It offers a holiday home feel that serves up to 8 guests at once. It's located only 5 minutes from Sumburgh Airport, making it an ideal choice of last-minute hotels in Sumburgh.
Setterbrae is located just 15 minutes from Sumburgh Airport, looking out over the RSPB Loch of Spiggie Nature Reserve on Shetland's mainland. It offers bed-and-breakfast-style accommodations with central heating and heated shower floors.
3. Kveldsro House Hotel
Kveldsro House Hotel is a boutique hotel Sumburgh's airport town of Lerwick. Located just five miles from Bressay Lighthouse, it's set in a building with a stone exterior. It offers traditional accommodations with a bar and restaurant featuring local Scottish and seafood dishes and sea views.
The Sumburgh Hotel does not have any spa facilities, nor do the other local hotels in Sumburgh's surrounding area. But when you're surrounded by the beaches of the Shetland Islands, even if you're staying at a boutique hotel in Sumburgh or the surrounding area, like the Grand Hotel or Queen's Hotel in Lerwick, you'll still want to get out and bathe in the natural waters.
Come to the Shetland Islands to experience remote natural beauty and traditional hospitality. Enjoy seafood and authentic Scottish cuisine. And whether you want to stay by Sumburgh Head itself, in Lerwick near the airport, or on any of the surrounding Shetland Islands, all within a 20-mile drive of each other, Skyscanner can help you to find your accommodation.
