Popular with young Israeli travellers, and with stoners generally, for its laid-back atmosphere and free availability of hashish, this hill station makes a convenient place to beat the heat of the summer plains. With good views, the town itself suffers some of the boxiness of Indian hill stations generally, but makes an excellent base for trekking excursions and other adventure activites (abseiling, rock climbing) into the nearby mountains, which -- aside from hashish -- is the main reason people come here. The nearby hotsprings are a considerable draw for those finishing a tough trek, or for those recuperating from the long, bumpy, multi-day haul over the mountains into ladakh, for which it's also the southern gateway. A little travellers' oasis in the southern Himalaya.
